Volunteering Case Study – Sharing Professional Expertise to support Charities
COVID-19 has impacted on us all, including charity and voluntary groups in Kirklees. TSL Kirklees have received numerous requests of help from organisations needing to adapt their services, make their buildings covid-safe and deliver services remotely. This unique set of circumstances has bought with it, new risks for the third sector.
Tim Larden kindly offered to deliver two workshops to support the sector in Kirklees, sharing his professional expertise. Tim has over 20 years of experience working in the insurance sector and is Managing Director of Ladbrook Insurers; a specialist insurance brokerage that only works with clients in the third sector.
The sessions were delivered by video call and covered how to manage some of these risks and why risk management is more important than ever. The sessions included a presentation followed by a question and answer session looking at how groups operate safely as we emerge from lockdown and what are their responsibilities.

“Tim was so helpful, offering his professional expertise for free, to benefit the sector in Kirklees. Many of our smaller charities and voluntary groups do not have paid staff with expertise in this area, so the workshop providing an opportunity to ask questions in a supportive environment. The sessions helped participants to better understand the importance of assessing and managing risks as we deal with changes in restrictions.”

“At Ladbrook, we only work with charities, social enterprise groups and community & voluntary organisations and we always hope this experience enables us to offer pertinent advice. Many small groups need support in understanding their risks as well as how insurance policies work to make sure appropriate measures are in place. There are a number of issues that affect most groups and so sessions like this can help share experiences and give groups more confidence in their activities”
