This means that we’re here to help you get started on your volunteering journey and support you through the process.
We also make sure that any groups or charities that advertise for volunteers on our website will look after their volunteers properly. Some of them will have a stamp of approval called the Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award (KVQA), which means that they’ve done even more to make sure that their volunteers are valued and have a good experience.

Here at The Kirkwood we provide a range of care and support aimed at improving the lives of people affected by any life-limiting illness in our local communities. We are extremely fortunate to have the support and commitment of over 800 dedicated volunteers who work alongside staff in a variety of roles and departments. The Kirkwood Team work tirelessly to support people to improve their quality of life; remain as independent as possible; and maintain their dignity until the very end. Families and loved-ones are also supported during the illness and in bereavement.
We couldn’t do what we do without our loyal volunteers! We aim to offer the very best volunteering experience, including a comprehensive induction; an annual education & training programme; long-service awards; and volunteer & staff celebration events. We’d love to hear from you if you can spare some of your time to help Kirkwood care and extend its reach to others that could benefit from the services we provide.
As a Kirkwood volunteer, you will be helping us to provide care to people from your own community who are affected by a life-limiting illness. A little of your time can make a massive difference to what we can achieve! Is it your time to make a difference? We hope to hear from you soon!
This role is supporting our Complementary therapy team located at our Hospice in Dalton (21 Albany Road, Huddersfield HD5 9UY)
and/ or at the Rosewood Centre at Dewsbury and District Hospital, Halifax Road, Dewsbury WF13 4HS.
Ideally you will be able to offer approx 3 hours per week.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Many of patients talk about the impact of their illness on their skin, their sense of identity and their confidence.
We’re seeking volunteer beauty therapists who can support patients with advice on dealing with skin issues linked to their illness or treatment and help with make-up techniques.
As a volunteer Beauty Therapist, you will work with our patients to teach them how to look after their skin. Your role as a volunteer can play a really important role in helping people with cancer to retain their sense of self and identity.
The role may include:
• Talking to clients, providing a relaxing and enjoyable treatment
• Educating clients about the impact of cancer and its treatments on their skin
• Listening to client concerns and helping them to address any concerns regarding their skin or appearance.
• Helping clients understand what products might benefit them.
• Teaching clients how to apply a basic, natural makeup.
• To undergo appropriate training as required
We are looking for people with the following skills and qualities:
• Skin care, beauty and/or makeup qualification (NVQ level 2+ or equivalent) or trained by the cosmetic brand which you currently work for
• One year’s hands on experience in the relevant industry
• Good communication skills
• Commitment and Reliability
All volunteers are required to complete an application form, provide two references, and obtain a Standard DBS Disclosure.
Volunteers are required to complete on-line training and specific training and mentoring will be provide for this role.
On–going supervision, training and development will continue throughout your volunteering with The Kirkwood and support is always available from the Volunteer Services Team.
