About the Organisation

The Kirkwood are here to support anyone affected by a life limiting illness, every step of the way.
Right now, over 3,000 people in Kirklees are living with an illness from which they will not recover. Many of them are approaching the end of their life. We’re here for people across our community whenever they need us. We help them to improve their quality of life and make the most of the time they have left. And we support families and loved ones to live on and live well.

Role Description

Some patients and service-users affected by life-limiting illness are, or are in danger of becoming, lonely and/or isolated.  This can be due to such things as reduced mobility, lack of confidence, bereavement, etc. Social distancing is likely to compound these feelings.  Telephone befriending can help to create new friendships, that help to keep people connected.

Our Telephone Befriending Service will be used by adult patients and service-users, with a variety of experiences, interests, preferences and befriending needs.  We will aim to achieve the best possible befriending ‘match’ by linking this information to Befriender’s Personal Profiles.

We are keen to hear from anyone who has:

  • Excellent communication & listening skills
  • A desire to support Patients
  • The ability to be flexible in the role

And who are:

  • Reliable and consistent
  • Helpful and dependable
  • Willing to use their own free minutes on their phone
  • Able to volunteer within defined role boundaries.

On successful completion of the recruitment process, volunteers will be invited to attend an Induction session and other role-specific training.

On–going supervision, training and development will continue throughout your volunteering with Kirkwood and support is always available from the Volunteer Services Team.
