Kirklees community food hub celebrates its 3rd Anniversary
The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is celebrating a significant milestone in Kirklees this month, marking the anniversary of its Chickenley Hub .
The hub has been serving the community for three years, providing families with regular access to affordable, nutritious food while preventing good food from going to waste.
Members can access 3 bags of food each week, including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled items, and cupboard staples from just £8.50. Healthy Start cards are accepted, and personal hygiene and other non-food items, are also available.
A member of the hub said “I’m less stressed about spending money on food. I don’t have to rely on cheaper processed food and cheap, lower quality foods. I enjoy the opportunity to try different foods and ways of using them. I also enjoy meeting different people whilst collecting the foods. It really is a lifeline in several different ways.”
Volunteers are at the heart of the hub. Their dedication ensures all hubs run smoothly each week and makes a real difference to local families.
Vic Harper, Chief Executive of The Bread and Butter Thing, said: “Marking three years in the Kirklees community is something we’re incredibly proud of. Over that time, we’ve seen how access to affordable, healthy food can bring people together, reduce waste and strengthen neighbourhoods. None of this would be possible without our brilliant volunteers, whose commitment and care sit at the heart of everything we do.”
Across TBBT’s network, 79% of members report eating more fruit and vegetables, 71% are cooking more meals at home, and 72% feel more connected to their community. Many save up to £25 a week, freeing up money for other household priorities.
Anyone interested in joining Chickenley Hub can register by texting 07507 237311 with their name, postcode, and chosen hub. Volunteers are also welcome — find out more at https://www.breadandbutterthing.org/volunteers

Bread and Butter is on a mission to improve diets, save people money and strengthen community resilience. As an organisation, it uses its platform to amplify members’ voices on the daily challenges they face such as diet diversity, food security, social isolation and debt and finance.
It works with leading supermarkets, such as Aldi, Morrisons, Co-op and Sainsburys.
