Environmental Ranger

Location: Huddersfield, Kirklees (with occasional travel across the district)
Contract: Permanent
Hours: The role is contracted for 7.5 hours per week. Additional paid hours may be available depending on project requirements. Some evening, weekend or bank holiday work may occasionally be required, with advance notice wherever possible.
Salary: 0.2 FTE £30,000 - £32,175 per annum (based on a 37.5-hour full-time week) dependent on experience. (£15.38 - £16.50 per hour)

Purpose of the Role
Support, recruit and develop volunteers who want to improve the local environment. You will organise volunteer activities, manage wildlife habitats, provide training and support, and help build relationships with community groups and employers.

About the Role
As environmental ranger, you will support and grow our volunteer programme. You will organise volunteer activities, lead environmental improvement projects and make sure volunteers feel welcomed, supported and valued. You'll work closely with volunteers, community groups, businesses, other employers, and partner organisations to help improve the local environment.
This role includes outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions and may involve walking on uneven ground, lifting and carrying equipment, and undertaking practical conservation activities. These activities include maintaining footpaths, planting trees and wildflowers, improving habitats for wildlife and caring for local green & blue spaces.

Key Responsibilities:
Volunteer Support
- Recruit, welcome and support volunteers.
- Organise volunteer activities.
- Ensure volunteers receive training and guidance.
- Help create a positive volunteering experience.
- Plan, organise and lead corporate volunteer days, ensuring participants have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding experience.
Project Delivery
- Lead practical environmental activities.
- Prepare sites before volunteer sessions.
- Carry out safety checks and risk assessments.
- Ensure tools and equipment are safe to use and maintained to a good standard.
Community Engagement
- Develop opportunities for people to connect with and learn about their local environment.
- Plan, organise and lead guided nature walks for volunteers, community groups and the wider public.
- Deliver talks, activities and informal learning opportunities that encourage participation in environmental projects.
- Promote volunteering opportunities and encourage new people to get involved.
- Act as an ambassador for EPIKS at community events and activities.
Partnership Working
- Work with local organisations and businesses.
- Report environmental issues to relevant agencies.
- Work closely with colleagues, senior leaders and partner organisations.
Administration
- Maintain volunteer records.
- Monitor activities and outcomes.
- Review volunteer policies and guidance.
- Record data from the volunteer sessions and share this with the EPIKS team.
- Assist EPIKS in working towards a Quality for Health and Wellbeing accreditation.
Personal Specification
Essential
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Experience supporting volunteers, community groups or similar audiences.
- Knowledge of biodiversity, green space management or environmental projects.
- Ability to organise and prioritise work independently.
- Commitment to environmental improvement.
- Basic IT skills, including email, Teams and Microsoft 365.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to travel to sites across Kirklees. A small electric van will be provided for volunteer sessions.
Desirable
- Experience delivering conservation activities.
- Experience using social media for engagement.
- Experience of leading guided walks.
