About the Organisation

Make a real difference where you live.

Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees is a local, independent charity proudly affiliated with Age UK. Every day, we support older people across our communities with practical, reliable services that help them stay independent, safe, and connected.

Our work doesn’t just change lives for older people — it gives families peace of mind, knowing their loved ones are well cared for.

Now we need you.

We’re looking for volunteers across Calderdale and Kirklees who want to support their local community, meet new people, and make a meaningful difference — right on their doorstep.

Whether you can give a little time or a lot, your support can help an older person live the life they choose.

Role Description

Help someone reconnect with their community

Would you enjoy getting out and about, meeting people and helping someone else enjoy the things they love?

We’re looking for Community Befriender volunteers to support older people who may have become isolated or lost confidence getting out and about.

As a Community Befriender, you could accompany someone to enjoy activities such as:

Coffee mornings or community cafés
Lunch clubs
Libraries or local groups
Garden centres
Walking groups
Exercise or wellbeing classes
Local events and activities

It might be about helping someone take that first step back into their community, offering a friendly face, and giving them the confidence to enjoy life outside the home again.

What’s in it for you?

Volunteering can be good for you too! You could:

  • Make a real difference to an older person’s life
  • Build a meaningful friendship and enjoy great company
  • Get out and about and discover more in your local community
  • Keep active and enjoy activities together
  • Meet new people and develop your communication skills
  • Gain valuable experience and build your confidence
  • Enjoy the feel-good factor of knowing you’ve helped someone reconnect with the things they enjoy

You don’t need any special qualifications or experience – just a friendly, encouraging attitude and a willingness to spend time with someone.

Could you help someone take that next step?

This role could be perfect for you if you:

  • Enjoy meeting and chatting with people
  • Like being active and getting out and about
  • Are patient, friendly and encouraging
  • Want to make a real difference to someone’s confidence and wellbeing
  • Have a little time to give on a regular basis

Flexible volunteering | Friendly support | Make a real difference

💛 Give the Gift of Friendship – it can change a life.
