We will soon be setting up a Mental Health focused self advocacy group.
Kirklees Autism Group (KAG) is a group for autistic adults in Kirklees with the aim of the group being to make sure that people with Autism have their voices heard by services in Kirklees. KAG have various monthly support groups including a LEGO group and several peer-based groups within Kirklees.
The groups are led by the services group and volunteer co-ordinator, we are looking for volunteers to support with the running of the Kirklees Autism Group.
The groups needing support meet monthly as follows:
Every 1st Friday - Lindley Library - LEGO Support Group - 2pm-4pm
Every 3rd Wednesday evening - Batley Community Centre - Peer Support Group - 6pm-8pm
Every 3rd Friday - New North Rd Baptist Church - Peer Support Group - 9:30am-12:30pm
Even if you can only support with 1 group please still get in touch. Support most needed for the 3rd Friday group in Huddersfield town centre.
The role includes:
- Practical support in setting up and offering drinks to group members as well as support to arrange and provide activities in the group.
- Engaging in conversations during the peer support groups and supporting new group members in attending and how to get involved.
- To support the co-ordinator in attending autism related events and networking events; sharing information with interested people about what we offer and how we support autistic adults in Kirklees.
- Attending steering group meetings and working together to support new ideas, activities for the group and to reach more autistic adults in Kirklees.
Skills required:
Previous experience of attending or supporting with groups is not essential as training will be given.
Qualities: Able to chat easily to people, awareness of and respect for confidentiality, awareness of safeguarding, listening skills, patience, honesty and awareness of autism.
Attitude: Non-judgemental, reliable, punctual.
Time commitment: Approx 8 hours per month (Minimum)
Expenses: Volunteer expenses will be authorised on Volunteer Expenses form with valid receipts or tickets attached. Details of this and other information relevant to volunteering is contained in the Cloverleaf Volunteer handbook.
In return you will gain experience and training (including training in group facilitation), help to gain valuable new skills and boost your confidence.
