A meaningful role in a close-knit Christian school community
Barkisland Primary School is seeking new volunteer governors to join our small, supportive Governing Body. As a Church of England school, our ethos of care, service and community shapes everything we do — and we’re looking for volunteers who share those values and want to help us continue giving children the best possible start in life.
Being a governor is genuinely rewarding. You’ll contribute to the school’s strategic direction, support senior leaders, and help ensure every child flourishes academically, socially and spiritually. You’ll also grow personally: developing confidence, leadership, strategic thinking, and a deeper understanding of how schools work.
Because our governing body is small, you won’t be lost among many voices — your contribution will matter, your perspective will be valued, and you’ll make a real difference.
What we’re hoping you’ll bring
We welcome people from all backgrounds, but we’re especially keen to hear from volunteers who are:
- Comfortable working with information, evidence or data, and able to ask thoughtful questions
- Good with people, able to listen well, support staff, and bring a calm, fair approach to discussions
- Organised and reliable, with an eye for detail and an interest in how things run behind the scenes
- Community-minded, with a desire to help a local school thrive
- Open to learning, willing to take part in training and develop new skills
You don’t need experience in education — just curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to grow.
What you’ll gain
- Strategic leadership experience
- Confidence interpreting information and making decisions
- Insight into safeguarding, inclusion, SEND and school improvement
- High-quality training through the Local Authority and Diocese
- A warm, supportive team who value each other’s strengths
- The satisfaction of knowing your contribution genuinely matters
What you’ll do
- Attend termly governing body meetings (Seven fixed meetings per academic year)
- Support a link area such as curriculum, inclusion, SEND or premises.
- Take part in school visits and monitoring activities
- Work collaboratively with a small, dedicated team
If you’re thoughtful, values-driven, and looking for a meaningful way to use your strengths for the good of the community, we’d love to hear from you.
