Developing knowledge and skills for Peer Support Work in Mental Health

Funded Accredited & Non-Accredited Training for Peer Support Workers, including volunteers – Peer Support Worker Programme at Teesside University

Cohorts running in September, January and April (accredited & non-accredited versions available)

Fridays from 0900 – 1200 – Online delivery

This course aims to enable existing peer support workers or those wishing to undertake the role for the first time to provide effective, value-driven support to people with mental health problems.

The course is fully co-produced meaning that people with lived experience of mental health and users of services have supported the development and design of course materials, and a key feature will be the co-facilitation of online seminars by people with lived experience of mental health problems and/or peer support work experience.  Values, principles, and legal and ethical issues of peer support will be demonstrated and debated. Practice-based learning experience will be supported by the sponsoring organisation, working in teams supporting people with lived experience of mental health problems in services. Students will have the support of a Supervisor in the workplace. This course is aligned to the Health Education England curriculum and competency frameworks for Peer Support Workers.

The course covers the following indicative content:

Ø  Values and principles of peer support, trauma-informed care, legal and ethical frameworks,

Ø  Recovery focused approaches, relational skills, working with difference

Ø  Partnership working to support personal recovery, working as part of a team,

Ø  Self-care and support, making use of supervision.

COURSE DELIVERY

The course is delivered over 12 weeks with weekly 3-hour sessions online. These sessions will be co-facilitated by academic staff and people with lived experience of mental health problems and/or experience of peer support work.
