Kirklees Environment Strategy: citizen engagement approach
Kirklees Council is forming a new Environmental Strategy and Sustainability Vision for Kirklees and would like your community to have its say.
The strategy aims to make sure the environment is a priority, underpinning everything they do, from health, wellbeing, economy, green spaces and communities.
They would like to make sure everyone has a voice in the development of this strategy, getting feedback on the impact it could have on everyday lives of local people. As such, they’re conducting a series of community panels, reaching out to a wide range of local groups and organisations to make sure all communities in Kirklees are represented, particularly those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to have their say.
Robert Green, Senior Climate Change Officer, Kirklees Council said:
“Community groups and organisation in Kirklees have strong links to these communities, and their input (and yours) could be invaluable in shaping a more sustainable future for Kirklees and its residents!
The primary focus of this is about listening to people in the community and gathering their thoughts. We wanted to start a conversation with you about how to connect with people who haven’t yet been part of the discussions so far and whether you think they’d be interested in taking part in something like this.
We’ve listed some of the communities we’re interested in talking to (but not specifically limited to) and particularly in engaging with younger people (16-25) and / or groups of different ethnic backgrounds from these communities:
- Batley
- Dewsbury – Heckmondwike – Birtsall – Birkenshaw and Liversedge & Gomersal
- Huddersfield
There will be a small series of sessions conducted between 3rd April and 14th April. Final dates have not been confirmed yet but we expect each session could last up to 2 hours. The format and location of these sessions are yet to be decided, but could be held virtually or done in-person, depending on what you think might work best for the group.”
If these sessions are of interest to you and the people in your community and you would like to share your thoughts, please email Robert.green@kirklees.gov.uk.
