River Holme Connections

Is a local charity with an aim to improve the whole of the River Holme Catchment. By connecting people, business and wildlife we can make it an even better place to live, work and experience.  We provide practical volunteering opportunities during the week and every third Saturday of the month from 10am-12 noon in various locations throughout the catchment area.  We also have a full programme of walks, talks and an education programme.

Do you have an educational background or enjoy working with children and young adults?

From its source on the moorlands above Holmfirth the River Holme and its tributaries flow north, meandering through some of Yorkshire’s most captivating landscapes before joining the River Colne at Aspley near Huddersfield town centre. Rich in history and heritage, and teeming with wildlife, the River Holme provides wellbeing opportunities for young and old. It can be a place for leisure and recreation, or somewhere to relax and connect with nature, but it needs looking after, and to do this, we need to educate the next generation!

River Holme Connections have an established education programme - "River Explorers" that we deliver to primary schools in the River Holme Catchment, free of charge, generally in outside learning areas, during the summer term. In Spring 2026 we hope to reach every primary school in the River Holme Catchment!

These fun, educational sessions teach children about riverflies and their vital role in the river food web, what makes a healthy river, and the incredible wildlife that depends on clean water. Through discovery and exploration, we hope to inspire lifelong curiosity and care for our rivers.

The sessions are led by our Engagement officer, a qualified teacher, but to make them engaging and interactive, we require additional adult support. All volunteers must get a DBS certificate through River Holme Connections and complete safeguarding training (organised by us). There is no regular commitment required - we email you a list of locations and dates, from which you can choose the ones that suit you.
