Volunteers' Week 2025
This year’s Volunteers’ Week takes place on Mon 2nd June – Sun 8th June. We are proud to support local small charities/ groups in saying thank you to their volunteers for their continued contribution to the community. Here are some words from our local volunteers:
“It’s a fantastic volunteer team experience at Shared Goods, it’s like a wonderful big International family all working cooperatively together.” Mohammed, Shared Goods volunteer
“All of my children were at school and I wanted to do something worthwhile in my spare time. I lacked confidence in my own abilities. The baby bank gave me the opportunity to not only help with putting referrals together but also to work in their charity shop. I gained skills that I never knew I had. It’s so rewarding helping a charity who support so many families in our community.” Lindsay, Rainbow Baby Bank volunteer

“I enjoy the experience of working as part of a brilliant team offering a vital service to the local community. We are a support network for many families struggling through the cost of living crisis and I include myself in that and I think any opportunity to prevent edible food going to landfill is a bonus.” Vikki, The Game Changerz volunteer
“Through volunteering at the centre I have been able to further my skills which have helped me in my work life. The opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives through the different projects that The Soothill Community Association does, provides me with so much satisfaction and I hope to continue being involved for many years to come.” Adam, The Soothill Community Association volunteer

“It’s really good, coming and volunteering to do something to make it nicer for everyone (the area). I’ve made new friends, it gets me out of the house and its good to help build my confidence I think. It’s good for the kids to see as well, so they see that it’s good to help other people.” Nicola, Unite, Respect, Connect volunteer
“Volunteering with LISAS CIC has given me the opportunity to put something backk into the community that i grew up in. I love the interactions i have with our members and my fellow volunteers. We provide a good range of activities which sometimes push me out of my comfort zone but, on the whole I enjoy. In addition this has helped to increase my skills and, more importantly, my confidence. Its geat to see the positive benefits attending the groups has on our members and it is rewarding to see them enjoying themselves, getting involved and going home with smiles on their faces.” Suzanne, LISA’S CIC

“Volunteering with happy moments has been an eye opening and inspiring experience for me. I tend to come in on a Tuesday and Thursday to assist with the stay and play sessions and the sensory play sessions both of which have required some help with creative play, chatting with other mums and sharing ideas for future sessions. As a mother myself, it has opened my eyes to the things I can do with my own daughter, the things that the community and other parents need locally. I intend on volunteering with happy moments long term as I really do enjoy being a part of this team.” Juwiriyyah, HappyMOMents volunteer

“Being a Volunteer has changed my life for the better. I am now a Trustee and help with other groups and the local Senior Citizen Group approached me to help them also. After the death of my wife, a lonely life has now become full of laughter and good times.” John, Kirkheaton Chair Exercise Group volunteer
“It’s such a great way to do so many positive things all at once. There’s the environmental impact, of course. But we also help a lot of people to keep treasured family items in good working order, and to help people save money where they can during such difficult financial times. And on top of all that, the community atmosphere at the repair cafe is incredible. It’s so much more than just fixing things!” Mark, Slawit Repair Café volunteer
