TSL Kirklees Wellbeing Fund Case Study: Outdoor Exercise
Using grant funding from the TSL Kirklees Wellbeing Fund, BBEST Community Hub CIC was able to ask Rachel Olsen-Saaler from Mama Unleashed to deliver her ‘mama + mini’ exercise class for 12 weeks.
What did you do?
Rachel Olsen-Saaler from Mama Unleashed has delivered her ‘mama + mini’ exercise class each week to our Fieldhead Mamas. The classes have taken place outdoor on the school MUGGA Field. Parents have been able to attend along with younger children and babies, some parents commenting that had the class not been able to accommodate children, they would be not have been able to join. Each week the ladies have enjoyed a different workout routine with various exercises targeting different areas of the body. The instructor has provided difficulty options dependent on individual’s strengths and capabilities. This has been extremely beneficial to one of our expectant mothers who has routinely practiced a certain stretch at home to ease her pregnancy aches.
How did you make connections with other services? (e.g. partnerships, referrals, signposts)
The attendees have formed a strong network and new friendships continue to flourish. The group have expressed a keen interest to continue with these classes following the summer break and as such we have been able to link up with the neighbouring colocation centre who have offered space for the ladies to work out indoors from September onwards. This will increase our ability to attract new members to the group, thus growing this community group even further.
What was the impact of the activity?
All participants have reported an improvement to their mental and physical health and their fitness levels. All participants reported that they would continue to exercise after attending these sessions, everyone has enjoyed the social element of this course. All participants would be interested in future courses and other learning which might be available to them.
