new arts hub brings creative writing and more to huddersfield
A new arts hub supporting people with mental health difficulties, poverty and loneliness opens in Huddersfield this September, offering free creative workshops in a welcoming and non-judgmental space.
Serendipity Creative Writers has been supporting the local community since 2018, using the arts – particularly creative writing – as a tool for wellbeing. Founder Sonia started the charity after her own experience with mental health struggles, having found creative writing to be a healing outlet.
The workshops will include a free-write session led by service users themselves, giving people the chance to express themselves, their feelings or explore topics that matter to them. There is no pressure to be a good or an accomplished writer – the sessions are simply a space to put thoughts on paper and an openness to share what you want at a pace that is comfortable to you. The sessions are paired with coffee, cake and the company of like-minded people.
“It’s not to be seen as a form of therapy, but something that is therapeutic” said Martyn, a Volunteer.
Many who have taken part in the sessions go on to see their work published. Serendipity Creative Writers have already released three anthologies of service users’ writing. Even the cover artwork is created by service users, making each book a genuine reflection of the community that shaped it.
The arts hub provides a space to be heard. Paul, a Service User and Artist said, “to be heard by others is beautiful,” adding that “a space where people from all walks of life are given the opportunity and confidence to share their experiences” when and if they want. That’s the feeling Sonia at Serendipity Creative Writers hopes to create for all visitors of the arts hub – one they want to sustain long term.
The arts hub plan to expand their offer to include more creative workshops; Script Writing, Art, Art & Crafts, upcycling clothes/furniture, cooking, singing group, MENs group, WOMENS group, LGBTQ+ groups, Sign Language workshops and Reiki sessions. They also act as a Kirklees Information point and will be asking the DWP & Citizens Advice Bureau to hold drop in sessions.
