Kirklees Tapestry Project to Celebrate the Enduring Legacy of the Windrush Generation

Huddersfield, May 2026 – Huddersfield Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church is proud to announce a successful grant award from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government for its ambitious new project.

Windrush on Tour will be a travelling photographic and digital tapestry celebrating the profound contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants across Kirklees.

This innovative, community-led initiative will culminate in the creation of a striking 6m x 2.28m tapestry, co-produced with local artists, church members, and the wider community.

The artwork will vividly portray Huddersfield’s Windrush legacy across key sectors, including the NHS, transport, education, community activism, textiles, politics, heritage, culture, sport, music and faith.

Blending physical and digital storytelling, the tapestry will incorporate digital signage linking to a permanent online archive of over fifteen oral histories. These recordings will capture authentic, often untold stories of migration, resilience, and achievement.

A Touring Legacy Across Kirklees

Over the course of a year, the tapestry will tour at least seven locations across Kirklees, including schools, colleges, community centres, libraries, churches, and the University of Huddersfield.

Each venue will host a dedicated launch event featuring guest speakers from the Windrush generation, ensuring meaningful cultural engagement.

The project aims to reach over 5,000 people directly, with impact measured through pre- and post-event surveys assessing increased awareness, intergenerational dialogue, and community pride.

Fostering Pride, Recognition, and Education

Windrush on Tour is designed to deepen national and local recognition of the historic and ongoing contributions made by the Windrush generation and their descendants.

By bringing the tapestry into community spaces and educational settings, the project validates lived experiences while encouraging shared understanding across cultures and generations.

A strong emphasis will be placed on inspiring young people through direct engagement with pioneers in sectors such as healthcare, politics, heritage, faith, and business.

Interactive displays and digital content will ensure these stories remain accessible, relevant, and impactful for future generations.

A Natural Home for Windrush Legacy

Huddersfield Seventh-day Adventist Church is a longstanding Christian faith community and a cornerstone of the local Windrush-descendant population.

Beyond spiritual life, the church plays a vital role in celebrating cultural heritage, fostering community cohesion, and supporting intergenerational connection.

“Our purpose is to honour the legacy of our Windrush-generation founders by preserving their stories and ensuring their contributions to sectors like faith, the NHS, education, and culture in Kirklees are fully recognised,” said Elder Edwin Baker, Project Lead.

Windrush on Tour transforms remembrance into a living, travelling celebration. By combining a physical tapestry with digital oral histories, we are creating a lasting educational resource that will spark conversation and build pride for years to come.”

Community and Stakeholder Engagement

The touring exhibition will launch as part of National Windrush Day 2026, with a public event featuring live testimonies, musical tributes, and the unveiling of the tapestry.

The community is invited to help shape the artwork itself. A public questionnaire is now open, asking residents, young people, and community groups what stories, symbols, and sectors they believe must be represented in the final tapestry design. The questionnaire can be accessed directly via the link below.

Woodscape Presented with Prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service

Woodscape is a volunteer community group based in Huddersfield which looks after the Bradley Gate, Screamer, Dyson and Lower Fell Greave Woods.

Woodscape was officially presented with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service during a special ceremony led by Professor Adeeba Malik, the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire.

Held at Dan’s memorial on a bright and sunny morning, the ceremony recognised more than 35 years of dedication and commitment from Woodscape volunteers, whose work has helped the organisation flourish across generations.

During the presentation, Monica Ilsley received the official certificate signed by the King, while Keith and Nick were presented with the engraved crystal award on behalf of the organisation.

The award is regarded as the highest honour given to local voluntary groups across the UK and celebrates the extraordinary efforts of community organisations and their volunteers.

Representatives from Woodscape said the recognition belongs to everyone who has supported the charity over the years — from its founders to the hundreds of volunteers who have worked tirelessly in the woods and allotment in all weathers.

Special tribute was paid to Dan, Betty, Judith and Mark, whose vision and determination helped establish Woodscape and create what organisers described as “something special” for the community.

The organisation also thanked everyone who attended the celebration and helped make the occasion memorable.

Remembering Jo Cox - 10th Anniversary

In 2026, we mark ten years since the death of Jo Cox, a dedicated MP who worked to bring people together and stand up for others. She is remembered for her belief that “we have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Her message connects strongly with our college values of kindness, excellence, and unity. Jo Cox showed kindness through her compassion, excellence through her commitment to serving others, and unity by encouraging communities to come together.

As we remember her, we are reminded that even small actions can make a positive difference in building a more inclusive and respectful society.

The Great Get Together

If you would like to get involved and show your support, there is The Great Get Together which is an annual celebration with multiple events to hold space and thought for Jo Cox. This year it is taking place on the 19th-21st June. Why not do your own class or curriculum Great Get Together event in the days before or after the main weekend? Making Standedge Tunnel more accessible for all

There’s positive change happening at Standedge Tunnel in Marsden, as a new initiative aims to open up one of the area’s most unique experiences to more people in the community.

The popular ‘Through the Tunnel’ canoe trips offer the chance to paddle through the longest, highest, and deepest canal tunnel in the UK—an unforgettable adventure. However, with each canoe costing £110 (£55 per person), organisers recognised that the experience hasn’t always been within reach for everyone.

In response, a new last-minute discount scheme is being introduced to help break down those barriers.

Under the scheme, any unsold places two weeks before a session will be offered to local community organisations, VSCE groups, and services supporting low-income families or individuals facing multiple challenges, at a significantly reduced rate of 50–70% off.

The aim is simple: make this incredible heritage and outdoor experience more inclusive, while still covering essential costs and supporting the Trust’s charitable work.

By working directly with community partners, the team hopes to ensure these opportunities reach the people who would benefit most—helping more individuals and families enjoy the wellbeing, adventure, and sense of achievement that comes from paddling through Standedge Tunnel.

If you’re part of a local organisation that supports people facing financial barriers, or you know a group that could benefit, you’re encouraged to get in touch with them directly and be part of this positive step towards a more inclusive future.

‘Fitness for Health in the Community’ is a free 12-week exercise referral programme and would be suitable for multiple health conditions including: asthma, arthritis, hypertension, COPD, joint replacement, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, anxiety, stress and diabetes. For this scheme, we accept referrals from registered primary care or allied health professionals.

The programme includes a pre and post 1:1 assessment and ongoing monitoring. It also features a weekly, small-group exercise class led by an exercise specialist. The class includes a mixture of strength, cardiovascular and balance exercises. Each class lasts an hour and aims to improve overall health and wellbeing. There’s also the option to book additional community-based exercise classes each week.

First Steps to Fitness – (This is a self-referral / recommendation scheme.)

‘First Steps to Fitness’ is a free 6-week behaviour change programme and would be suitable for inactive individuals who would benefit from becoming more physically active but need additional support to build the skills and confidence to get started.

Small group sessions run once a week for 6-weeks, each visit lasts an hour and entails a 30-minute seminar based session and the opportunity to exercise with an instructor for 30 minutes. Every week we cover a different lifestyle related topic, for example physical activity, nutrition, sleep hygiene and stress management.

We also set each person up using the KAL app to book additional exercise classes, as well as giving access to our ON DEMAND virtual exercises that can be accessed anywhere. If you’re interested, you can use the link below to self-refer: Kirklees Active Leisure – Online Referral Form

Kirklees community food hub celebrates its 3rd Anniversary

The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is celebrating a significant milestone in Kirklees this month, marking the anniversary of its Chickenley Hub .

The hub has been serving the community for three years, providing families with regular access to affordable, nutritious food while preventing good food from going to waste.

Members can access 3 bags of food each week, including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled items, and cupboard staples from just £8.50. Healthy Start cards are accepted, and personal hygiene and other non-food items, are also available.

A member of the hub said “I’m less stressed about spending money on food. I don’t have to rely on cheaper processed food and cheap, lower quality foods. I enjoy the opportunity to try different foods and ways of using them. I also enjoy meeting different people whilst collecting the foods. It really is a lifeline in several different ways.”

Volunteers are at the heart of the hub. Their dedication ensures all hubs run smoothly each week and makes a real difference to local families.

Vic Harper, Chief Executive of The Bread and Butter Thing, said: “Marking three years in the Kirklees community is something we’re incredibly proud of. Over that time, we’ve seen how access to affordable, healthy food can bring people together, reduce waste and strengthen neighbourhoods. None of this would be possible without our brilliant volunteers, whose commitment and care sit at the heart of everything we do.”

Across TBBT’s network, 79% of members report eating more fruit and vegetables, 71% are cooking more meals at home, and 72% feel more connected to their community. Many save up to £25 a week, freeing up money for other household priorities.

Anyone interested in joining Chickenley Hub can register by texting 07507 237311 with their name, postcode, and chosen hub. Volunteers are also welcome — find out more at https://www.breadandbutterthing.org/volunteers

For further information and images, please contact: pr@breadandbutterthing.org

The Bread and Butter Thing (Bread and Butter) is the largest member-based food redistribution charity in the UK, working in 156 hubs across 33 local authorities from the East Midlands to North Tyneside. It helps food budgets go further by providing fresh, healthy, affordable food to its 100,000 members in low-income communities. Over the past year, this has equated to roughly 21.4 million meals saved and most members £25 a week.

Bread and Butter is on a mission to improve diets, save people money and strengthen community resilience. As an organisation, it uses its platform to amplify members’ voices on the daily challenges they face such as diet diversity, food security, social isolation and debt and finance.

It works with leading supermarkets, such as Aldi, Morrisons, Co-op and Sainsburys.

Local Charity Launches Inclusive Fundraising Event Ahead of Neurodiversity Celebration Week

With Neurodiversity Celebration Week (16–20 March) fast approaching, Mirfield-based Northorpe Hall Child + Family Trust is launching a new inclusive fundraising event to celebrate what makes every child unique — while raising vital funds for children’s mental health services.

The fundraiser, part of the charity’s new campaign “A Place That Gets Me,” invites schools, businesses and community groups to hold a non-uniform or themed day where participants wear something that reflects their personality, passions or interests.

The aim is to encourage conversations about individuality and inclusion, while supporting Northorpe Hall’s wellbeing and mental health services — particularly for neurodivergent young people.

Ideas include:

  • Wearing a favourite colour
  • A sports kit or team shirt
  • A favourite book, film or character
  • Or anything that expresses what makes someone unique

To help extend the campaign’s reach, Northorpe Hall is partnering with Operam Education Group, a UK-wide group of specialist education recruitment agencies, including local agency Provide Education. Operam will be supporting the initiative across its sites in the Midlands and the North.

Paula Ho, Regional Director at Operam Education Group, said:

“We’re thrilled to support Northorpe Hall in this inclusive fundraising campaign. Creating spaces where young people feel truly understood is something we care deeply about, and we’re proud to play a part in making that happen.”

Although the event is initially being run during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Northorpe Hall are keen to highlight that it can be run at any time of year, leaning once again into the idea of it being a fully inclusive activity.

A fundraising pack will be provided to all participants, including guidance, activity ideas and promotional materials. To register or find out more, visit: www.northorpe.com/aplacethatgetsme

Women of West Yorkshire Event

Date: Tues 3 March, 3:30-6pm

Venue: Caygill Rooms, The Piece Hall, Halifax

Click here to book your place

The Women of West Yorkshire network meets at The Piece Hall to learn together, spark ideas, and grow confidence and community.

This year, we’re embracing the International Women’s Day theme “Give to Gain” — a reminder of the power that emerges when women share what they know, support one another, and build community through generosity and collaboration.

The event will open with remarks from the Mayor and the Inclusivity Champion, before moving into an informal, welcoming space where WoWY members can explore, mingle, and take part in a skills‑exchange marketplace designed for women, by women.

Rather than formal presentations, the heart of this gathering is you—your strengths, your passions, and the everyday skills that help women lift each other up.

This event is about celebrating women’s skills in all their forms—big or small, polished or emerging—and giving space for WoWY members to shine, learn and grow together. Join us as we celebrate International Women’s Day the WoWY way: by giving, gaining, and lifting one another higher.

The programme is for people 18+ in Kirklees who are:

  • Out of work, or at risk of leaving work, due to a physical or mental health condition
  • Would benefit from personalised support to build confidence, wellbeing, and skills
  • Looking for meaningful ways to reconnect with their community – through volunteering, training or employment

We’re working with the TSL Kirklees Community Anchor networkCommunity Champions network, local Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and other health colleagues and services to create a network of Health Hubs and Keyworkers.

This activity is part of Healthy Working Life, a joint programme of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, delivering the Mayor’s vision for West Yorkshire to have the healthiest residents and workforce in England by 2040.

work with us

We’re currently recruiting for a passionate and skilled Grant Worker who will help bring exciting community-led ideas to life across Kirklees. You will be the friendly face of the grants programme – supporting local groups of all shapes and sizes to understand the programme, develop strong applications, and turn their ideas into reality.

This role involves building relationships with grassroots organisations and stakeholders from the local authority and health sector, adapting your communication style to suit a range of audiences. You’ll also help us capture and share the impact of the grants, through insights, reports, and storytelling.

Closing date – Friday 29th August, 2025

TSL Kirklees Communications: Give us your feedback!

How do you like to get information from us and what you find most useful?

As you know, we at TSL Kirklees are here to support voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations, and providing information about our services and activities is key to this. We’re therefore reviewing our communications and are asking for you input.

Please take 5-10 minutes to complete our anonymous survey. (All questions are optional, but please give us as much information as you can.)

Your feedback will help us:

  • Focus on what matters to you most
  • Make sure that our updates are relevant and accessible
  • Strengthen how we work together in Kirklees

The survey closes at 5pm on Friday 29th August, 2025, and we thank you in advance for you comments and suggestions.

If you have any questions or would like the survey in a different format, please contact comms@tslkirklees.org.uk, 01484 519053.

Have your say on developing a strategic relationship with WYCA

What would a West Yorkshire VCSE Sector Advocacy Group mean to you?

A key part of our work as the Local Infrastructure Organisation (LIO) for Kirklees is in representing the sector at a strategic level, both locally and regionally, and in working with key partners and statutory bodies, like the council and NHS. More, and more, though we’re now working at a West Yorkshire level, alongside the other West Yorkshire VCSE LIOs, in order to strengthen the strategic relationship between our sector and the Mayor of West Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA).

Following on from a facilitated workshop earlier this year, discussions have continued between the five LIOs, VCSE leads in the five Local Authorities and WYCA about practical steps that we could take to develop a shared work programme.

We believe that it’s essential for VCSE voices and expertise to be included in co-designing, co-producing this work, and finalising an action plan for creating the West Yorkshire VCSE Sector Advocacy Group (working title). This will be the recognised regional VCSE sector strategic point of contact for the Mayor and WYCA (and a draft terms of reference has been developed).

If you would like to find out more about this work, find out how TSL Kirklees has been working with WYCA, or share your views about the VCSE Advocacy Group and how it should be formed, please send your details via our online form, or email Helen Orlic, by Friday 5th September 2025.

Colourful circular logo with the words 'VCSE Workforce Research Study'

Help Shape the Future of Support for Frontline Workers in Kirklees VCSE Sector

Are you working in a charity, community group, or social enterprise in Kirklees that delivers health and wellbeing services? Your voice is essential!

Take part in the VCSE Workforce Study now – Deadline 18th July

A major new VCSE workforce study (led by The University of Sheffield, Leeds Beckett University and Community Partners) is underway to better understand how we can support people like you – dedicated staff working on the frontlines of community health and wellbeing. Whether you’re helping people stay connected, supporting mental health, or delivering other vital services, we want to hear about your experiences.

Why It Matters

Many people in paid roles in the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector say they don’t get enough professional support – things like training, mentoring, or resources that help them thrive in their roles. This lack of support can lead to burnout and high turnover, affecting not just staff but the communities they serve.

This project, running until 2027, and of which the VCSE workforce study is just one part, is designed to change that. It focuses on creating real, practical improvements that work specifically for organisations like yours – not one-size-fits-all solutions from bigger systems like the NHS.

How You Can Help

Take the survey now to contribute to shaping the tools, training, and support systems that future community organisations across Kirklees (and beyond) can use. The research team is working directly with local organisations in West and South Yorkshire to gather insights and co-develop effective support strategies.

Who Should Take Part?

Anyone in a paid role delivering community-based health and wellbeing services – no matter your job title. If you’re doing the work, your experience counts.

Take the VCSE Workforce Survey and Make Your Voice Heard

It’s completely optional and should take approximately 25 minutes to complete. It is open until 18th July.

If you would prefer to complete the questionnaire with a researcher online/over the phone or need it in another format, then please contact vcseworkforcestudy@sheffield.ac.uk

All responses will be treated confidentially and used for research purposes only. Individual responses will not be shared with your employer (or any other organisations).

As a thank you for your time and contribution, participants who take part in the VCSE Workforce Study and provide their contact details will be entered into a prize draw for one of six £20 vouchers.

We want to hear as many people’s views as possible, so please forward this email to your colleagues/peers.

Further information

If you have any questions about the survey, please do not hesitate to contact Sophia Arthurs-Hartnett, Research Associate, at vcseworkforcestudy@sheffield.ac.uk.

If you are not eligible or do not want to complete the survey but want to be kept updated about the study findings, please email us at vcseworkforcestudy@sheffield.ac.uk.

Your input will directly influence how we build better, more sustainable support for our local VCSE workforce.

Let’s build a stronger future for our sector – together!
