CCGs' bid to improve doctor's services

NHS Greater Huddersfield and North Kirklees Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are looking to hear from young people about their experiences at the doctor’s, in a bid to try and improve services.

Residents who are under the 25 and want to help should fill out an online survey form, issued from the CCGs. They are particularly interested to hear people’s personal stories, especially from people who identify as LGBTQ+.

The form is anonymous and the information that is gathered will be provided to doctors, so they can ensure young people are supported in the right way.

Zubair Mayet, Engagement Manager at NHS Greater Huddersfield CCG said: “We want to gather as much information as possible to help us understand what works well, what doesn’t work so well.

“This will help us identify if any improvements need to be made. Even if you hardly ever, or don’t go to the doctors, we still want to hear from you!”

To take part in the survey, visit www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/YoungPeopleGPPractice/.

Closing date for all responses is midday on Monday 2 March 2020.

If you would like to share your personal experience with the CCGs, email Matt.Thompson@northkirkleesccg.nhs.uk

Successful launch for Healthy Holidays 2020

Kirklees Youth Alliance (KYA) has received council funding for their Healthy Holidays 2020/21 programme.

The funding will help local holiday clubs with provisions needed to combat ‘holiday hunger’ in Kirklees. This was highlighted at the Healthy Holidays 2020/21 launch event.

The event, which took place at Northorpe Hall, Mirfield, provided a networking space for Healthy Holiday partners to engage with one another. It also provided information on the partner application process for any clubs that wanted to join the programme as a new partner.

report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on hunger found that as many as three million children in the UK were returning to school in a worse educational, health and developmental state than that in which they had left in the summer.

As a result, local voluntary sector organisations, such as KYA and their partners have had to step in order to ensure that children in the Kirklees area are not affected by ‘holiday hunger’.

Susan Greenwood, Development Manager, Kirklees Youth Alliance said: There’s a significant issue in the school holidays regarding holiday hunger. Many children and young people who ordinarily get free school meals in term time don’t have that in the holidays. We aim to try to fill that gap.

We want potential delivery partners to come along today and find out about what the process is, find out about the background of the Healthy Holidays Programme, and how they can get involved.

We hope to get good quality delivery partners, so we’ve got excellent and enjoyable provision for young people over the holidays.”

Rachael Ainsworth, Community Co-ordinator for the Summers Club said that it was vital that children have activities available to them over the summer holidays.

She said: “Today’s event is to bring together people who want to provide holiday clubs for children in the area, specifically those that are on free school meals.

Holiday clubs are vital because school holidays are six weeks long, and children get bored.

There isn’t a massive provision of free activities in the area. We hope to be able to run some fabulous summer clubs, especially in the areas where it has been identified as ‘needed’.

We want to reach out to as many children as possible, so that they can get away from their tellies and have some fun in the great outdoors.

Alice Thomas, Community Co-ordinator for HD5 Rise & Shine mentioned the benefits that networking events have for local school clubs, as well as organisations.

She said: “Sometimes people don’t always know what providers are out there. We want to help children to have a really good summer, because it’s seven weeks and it’s much longer.

This event allows you meet new providers, so children can get new experiences, try new activities, especially things they may not have done before.

Kirklees Youth Alliance is a new umbrella organisation for community groups providing positive activities for young people across Kirklees, West Yorkshire.

New Report Looking at the Value That the Third Sector Brings to Kirklees

TSL Kirklees have published a new report called ‘Ready, Agile and Able… How The Voluntary And Community Sector Adds Social Value to Life in Kirklees.

It highlights some of the great work that goes in our communities that make a real difference to people’s lives, and matches it to the Council’s 7 Shared Outcomes, and includes some great case studies and inspirational stories, alongside facts and figures that look at things like:

  • how our sector provides essential services, such as non-profit nurseries, community transport and affordable social carehow it helps keep people well, and makes social prescribing possible
  • how it provides jobs and opportunities and helps people gain skills, qualifications and find employments
  • how it improves communities and brings people together
  • and how it contributes million of pounds to the local economy

Chair of Third Sector Leader Kirklees, Hilary Thompson said,

This report recognises and shares examples of what works. Third Sector Leaders is keen to build on our sector’s diversity, strengths and know-how to collaborate successfully and achieve more.

She went on to point out some of the things that make the third sector different from other sectors,

We work with communities, individuals and families to find better solutions: Working with people not doing to them is part of our DNA. Most third sector services and organisations are rooted in ideas of people coming together, finding resources and making things change for themselves and people around them.

We value working together: Scarce resources mean we are natural collaborators and networkers. Working with partners creates capacity and adds value to what we deliver. We believe in mutual support and know that sharing knowledge skills and resources often sparks innovative solutions.

We start where people are at: Our members address issues at a neighbourhood level; issues such as social isolation, unavailable childcare or inadequate support services. Our practical place-based working uses local knowledge to take action and strengthen communities.

The report also includes and overview of the sector and an introduction to TSL Kirklees, its ethos and services.

Announcing KYA School's Out Healthy Holidays Programme 2020

Launching this year’s programme, review of last year’s programme & new targeted provision

Review of Healthy Holidays 2019

Last year’s pilot KYA School’s Out Healthy Holidays programme was a huge success and we’d like to thank everyone involved. We held a series of review events at the end of last year, but in case you missed them, here’s a summary and report evaluating the whole scheme.

Launching Healthy Holidays 2020

We’re holding 2 events at Northorpe Hall in Mirfield on Tuesday 11th February, to launch the delivery partner application process for this year’s programme, and we’d like to invite the community, voluntary and social enterprise sector to come along to meet some new Healthy Holidays partners and find out how to become a club provider for summer 2020.

Calling VCS groups working with vulnerable families with school age children

One of the biggest challenges of the HH Programme last summer, in the short timescale, was filling places on the clubs with children and young people who would most benefit. As a funded programme, it is essential that we ensure we meet the needs of the most disadvantaged children in communities across Kirklees.

We are therefore proposing this year that we have a 4 week period, from 8 June – 3 July, when HH places are only open to families targeted by an approved list of referral bodies (schools, VCS organisations, statutory teams who are working with families with school age children who may be at risk of holiday hunger or other poor outcomes and cannot afford to pay for similar activities).  Any remaining places will be opened up from 6 July to any children living or studying in Kirklees.

Please get in touch if you would like to go on the contact list – kya@tslkirklees.org.uk

Third Sector Help Needed on 'Poverty-Proofing the School Day' Project

Appeal to groups interested in co-designing & co-producing a new initiative to help identify and reduce disadvantage in school-age children

Sean Hurry, Policy and Strategy Consultant at Kirklees Council has asked for help and input from local third sector organisations on developing a new project. This is at a very early stage, but he would like to hear from groups who may have innovative ideas about how to make this happen.

The aim of the initiative is:

Through locality-based training, school staff will be upskilled to identify and overcome the barriers to learning associated with household poverty: ensuring children living in poverty are supported and given the opportunity to aspire, achieve, and fulfil their ambitions in a safe inclusive learning environment.

Join us for celebration events in January and March in Batley and Huddersfield

We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved over the last (almost) 3 years, and how we’ve been able to partner with community organisations and learning providers to offer additional courses that address gaps, overcome barriers and help community groups deliver creative and engaging local activities that encourage people to build their confidence, try something new or learn a new skill.

Joe’s Story

After being referred to CLW by Carers Count, Joe, who has a learning disability and autism, has made use of his interest in social media and photography by volunteering with KLTV, and taking part in a marketing project for Bagshaw Museum and Batley Smile. He has gone on to win an Adult Community Learning Award.

I never thought I would be doing anything like this

When I was told about the marketing project about Bagshaw, I jumped at the chance.  I am from Batley and have always loved spending time in the park.  I know there are so many great ways to improve the park and museum.  I think a great idea would be to do a photography club.

Nikki’s Story

Nikki is a single parent who has experienced a lot of challenges and barriers in her life, including past addictions that have meant that, even though she’d received a lot of employment and skills support, she’d lost all her confidence and wasn’t progressing. Now, with CLW’s help, she has been able to turn her life around in a very short time and is an inspiration to her friends and family.

This has all been in a small time frame of around four months. I am more hopeful for the future now than I have ever been in nearly ten years!
