Children’s Services in Kirklees are ambitious. We want Kirklees to be the best place for children and young people to grow up. Families, communities and the voice of the child are at the heart of our improvement journey. We also want children and families to be at the centre of the plans for Place, Partners and People in Kirklees.
We are proud of what we have achieved over the past few years and we recognise there is more to be done. We are a looking for a candidate to help us fulfil and deliver our ambitions.
We are seeking a Service Director to achieve excellence across all Children’s Services by maximising its resources, developing further its relationships with key stakeholders and partners, ensuring that the young people in Kirklees are engaged and influence the developments and plans across the Authority.
As well as recognising our strengths, the post holder will be required to be able to innovate and develop new ways of working and engagement in a challenging environment. Key to this approach will be understanding our Restorative Practice model and ensuring that this further embedded across the organisation.
The intention is that the post holder will be seconded from their current employer, remaining on their substantive terms and conditions and their current employer refunded the costs of employment. An indicative grade for the role is Agenda for Change 8d/9 or Service Director (Local Authority).
This post is temporary for a year from the date of appointment.

Community Learning Works is now in it’s 3rd year (funded initially by Kirklees Council with further funding from National Lottery), and we’re organising a couple of celebration events to showcase some of the successful projects, and promote some of the great local opportunities for volunteering and learning.

We’d like to say a big thank you to all the groups and organisations who’ve been involved in running the Healthy Holidays programme so far. It was a huge project to pull off at short notice, and despite the initial teething problems, we’ve been getting some great feedback and things are going well.
If you work with young people and families, please encourage them to make use of the service. The 48 clubs are still offering around 1100 places a day for school age children for the remainder of the summer holidays.

Plus, we’ve been involved in organising a free youth festival this Saturday in Reinwood, Huddersfield with music, food, fairground rides, climbing wall and more.

TSL Kirklees has been approached by a group of local people who are concerned about the lack of consistency in bus services in Kirklees and who would like to start a new campaign along the lines of the Better Buses campaign in Manchester. They’d like to hear from local organisations who’d be interested in getting involved to identify and address issues, drive the campaign forward, and represent different sectors of the community.
The ambition for the group is to have a say in local consultations, work with local councillors who are involved in transport, both locally and across the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and lobby for consistency in fares and services across Kirklees, including:

Over 200 people flowed through the doors, who all had an opportunity to vote for the 7 entrants competing in the community bake off competition. All entrants’ cakes were tasty, rich, creative in design and worthy winners, however, the winner selected by the community and the judges was mother and daughter team of Nuhida Ali and Aneesa Ali who won £50. Lost for words on the afternoon, Nuhida offered a written quote:
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for our cake and the judges for choosing our cake as the winner. Everyone’s cakes were amazing, and I’m sure they all enjoyed making them with their daughters. I would also like to thank the event organisers, for their efforts in putting everything together. It was a good turnout and i hope everyone enjoyed the lovely cakes.
Bridget Hughes from Community Learning Works said:
Well done to all the team at Thornton Lodge Action Group for organising such an enjoyable and successful community event and congratulations to the winners and all the entrants. Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust continues to grow and around 75% of all charity funds are spent on salaries, so we are recruiting again.
In 2019, we’re a partner in Thriving Kirklees – joining up and transforming health services for families in Kirklees and we have additional funds to reduce waiting times. We’re working more closely with schools and have been funded to pilot mental health support teams in schools, again in partnership. We continue to successfully raise funds by working with local businesses and through weddings and events in our barn, as well as receiving funds from the Big Lottery and Children in Need.
There are a wide range of people working at Northorpe Hall in 2019 – over 70 employees, plus volunteers, self-employed workers including counsellors, trainee education mental health practitioners and CAMHS and Nursing staff employed by partner organisations, co-located with us to join up services and provide the best support to families and young people in Kirklees.
The team is diverse, talented, hard-working and friendly – with a wide range of experience and professional backgrounds. Some joined us early in their career and have gained experience and qualifications with us over the years, others have brought significant experience from education, social care, clinical settings and family or youth work. We provide high quality support, supervision and training to staff to ensure they can provide quality support to young people and families. We work 8am to 8pm to respond to family’s needs, so we can offer flexible working and part-time hours too.
Now is a great time to join the Northorpe Hall team. You’ll get great experience of innovative, responsive mental health support to children and families; get training and development opportunities to grow your skills and knowledge and you’ll feel supported and valued as part of a team. You will also make a real difference to the lives of local young people who really need your support and care.

Do you access health care and social care in Kirklees?
Many people need both health care and social care and we know that many people, including carers and family, have to contact both health and care services seperately, In Kirklees this often means contacting Locala through Single Point of Contact (SPoC) and Kirklees Council through Gateway to Care.
Kirklees Council are supporting a programme of research to understand and improve people’s experiences of contacting services about their individual care, support and health needs. We would like people who have had experience of contacting both health and care services, to join us at this workshop where we will explore:
Please join us at the Walsh Building, Dewsbury on Friday 13th September 2019, from 1pm to 2.30pm, for a friendly, informal session to share your insight and experiences. Light refreshments will be provided and travel expenses can be reimbursed.
We can provide assistance to enable you to attend or particpate, if you need it. Please let us know when you book.
Any information you provide will be seen only by the Gateway to Care and Locala team working on this project. We won’t share your details with anyone else.
Thank your for reading and for your interest in shaping the future of social care in Kirklees.

Last August the government published its civil society strategy. One year on Elizabeth Chamberlain, Head of Policy and Public Services at NCVO, looks at what’s happened, whether any progress has been made, and what effect Brexit and changes in ministers have had.
Since its publication last summer, we’ve seen changes in the ministers in charge of civil society policy, as well as a necessary focus on all the departments’ resources and capacity on preparing for Brexit, most urgently for the event of no deal. And politically, as of last month we have a new government in charge.
All this has inevitably meant that the impetus that was initially behind the strategy, as well as its ambitions of setting a roadmap for the future of civil society, has somewhat been lost along the way.
But has this really been noticed? Are charities up and down the country asking themselves ‘what is happening with the civil society strategy?’.

We’ve decided to keep August’s Members’ Meeting in central Huddersfield so that we can discuss the proposed Kirklees Blueprint for the town centre, and even pop out to look at some of the earmarked sites if necessary. It would be great to be able to pull together some third sector views on the changes.
We’ll also be:
and of course, we’ll be celebrating Yorkshire Day.
About The Meetings
Our TSL Kirklees Members’ Meetings are held bi-monthly and are an opportunity for our member organisations to get together, share knowledge and experience, and hear from key third sector partners, experts and commissioners about their initiatives and priorities. The meetings are made up of a mixture of speakers, workshops and discussions, networking, and opportunities to promote our services and activities and get help and support from peers. We try our best to make sure it’s two hours well spent and worth the time out of your organisation or community business.
Non-members charities, community and voluntary group and social enterprises are welcome to come along as guests before deciding whether they’d like to join. Our aim is to help develop, support and grow a healthy, active and collaborative third sector in Kirklees. Our membership fees therefore are designed to cover the costs of our meetings and member-only activities and allow as many people as possible to take part.
