Volunteering Survey: Tell us about what you do & why

Help us get a picture of why people help out in their local communities & what might be stopping others from getting involved…

We want to find out a bit more about people who give some of their time to help in their local communities. For example, some people may:
  – Organise a knit and natter group
  – Help out at a Stay and Play session
  – Coach a youth football team
  – Run a local choir
  – Be a key holder for a community building

We would like to know more about why people get involved with helping their local community and what might put others off doing so. In this survey, we call anyone who gives his or her time free to help out a ‘volunteer’.

It would be helpful if you could take a few minutes to answer some questions. All the information we gather will be treated confidentially –information will be collected by Kirklees Council and only shared with Communities United Project and Third Sector Leaders Kirklees.

Please share the survey with your volunteer teams and anyone else who you know helps out in your community, and fill it in yourself if you give your time for free in any capacity.

The #iwill Fund is an England wide joint investment that brings together £40 million in funding from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and The National Lottery Community Fund, creating a central investment pot. West Yorkshire based sexual violence charity to host official launch of VictimFocus Academy on 8th July

Survivors West Yorkshire, the Yorkshire region’s ONLY online specialist support service for male survivors of child sexual abuse (Ben’s Place) hosts launch of VictimFocus Academy with the generous support of the Digital Health Enterprise Zone (DHEZ)

This exciting event is taking place on Monday 8 July 2019 at The Digital Exchange in Little Germany, Bradford. It will celebrate the launch of the VictimFocus Academy and Resources Collection, an innovative new international service providing evidenced, critical and ethical resources, tools, books and products. The new collection of resources and education aim to support the field to improve our responses to people who have experienced sexual violence, abuse and trauma.

With a focus on developing professionals and students towards anti-victim blaming, anti-stigma, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches, Dr Jessica Eaton will present discussion, debate and findings from her work and from her new resources and services.

The VictimFocus business model is an ethical approach to provision of resources and education, with much of the new products being completely free and with all products being priced to be very affordable.

Dr Eaton (FRSA) is the founder and owner of VictimFocus, the VictimFocus Blog and The Eaton Foundation. The VictimFocus Blog has 1.2 million readers per year and provides a lively, funny and critical perspective on CSE, victim blaming, feminism and sexual violence against females and males. In 2018, Dr Eaton developed and launched the VictimFocus Charter to encourage all professionals to challenge and reduce victim blaming in their practice.

Bob Balfour, CEO and founder of Survivors West Yorkshire, said “we are delighted to be hosting such an important event. It is particularly poignant at a time when funding is increasingly difficult to get, despite organisations reporting big increases in demand for their services. Victim blaming undermines the safeguarding of children and the well-being needs of the adults they become.”

Survivors West Yorkshire is the home of Ben’s Place, a pioneering and secure specialist digital cloud based counselling service. It currently provides professional counselling, emotional support and advice during its operating hours. Its counsellors are BACP registered and have undergone specialist training to work online. During 2019 – 2020 it hopes to offer increasing counselling and support services offline across West Yorkshire.

The free counselling service is available to all males (aged 16 years plus) throughout the whole of West Yorkshire.

Ben’s Place is named after a West Yorkshire male survivor who experienced childhood sexual abuse between the ages of 10 and 13. Ben took his own life shortly after his 23rd birthday.

Researchers have found that 1 in 6 men have experienced abusive sexual experiences before the age of 18. This is probably a low estimate, since it doesn’t include non-contact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. West Yorkshire has some of the highest rates of sexual crime in the UK.

The mission of Ben’s Place is to deliver a professionally qualified and informed specialist support, counselling and advice service to adult male survivors (currently aged 16 plus) who are ready to look for help with their experiences of sexual crimes committed against them.

Simply knowing they’re not alone is powerful and healing for many male survivors, especially given society’s denial of sexual violence-abuse, as evidenced by the latest reports from the Inquiry into Childhood Sexual Abuse (IICSA) led by Prof, Alex Jay.

Survivors West Yorkshire has, for 20 years, proactively lobbied to improve services. It believes that when society listens to the stories of recovery and growth that survivors experience when they are able to access good practice specialist services, it will want to support the amazing courage males show by breaking their silence to recover from the sexual crimes – done to them – as children or adults.

Take Part: Survey of Social Enterprise Activity in Kirklees

And book now for the next More Than Profit Network meeting…

Deadline extended: Please complete the survey by 13th September to help us support & grow social enterprise in Kirklees

Third Sector Leaders Kirklees and Kirklees Council are supporting researchers from Leeds Beckett University with a study to explore the scale of Social Enterprise Activity (SEA) across the Region. This is part of our work to support and grow social enterprise with new initiatives such as the new More Than Profit Network.

More Than Profit Network

The next More Than Profit Network breakfast meeting will be on Wednesday 18th September at Northfield Hall in Huddersfield. Network members will take part in a mini workshop on Improving Your Social Enterprise with SEE Ahead, and will hear from the council about how social enterprises can get involved in shaping plans and improving the town centre in Huddersfield. Find out more and book now…

Complete the survey

Instigated by West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), the research aims to:

  • Establish the scale and scope of the activity/sector
  • Examine the challenges that organisations undertaking SEA face
  • Identify gaps in the infrastructure supporting organisations delivering SEA
  • Formulate some practical policy options to support the development of the sector

For the study we would like to receive input from a wide range of organisations, including both those which classify themselves as Social Enterprises, and those that have a wider remit but undertake Social Enterprise Activities as part of their operation (SEA is defined as trading / selling goods or services which also fulfil a social mission). To take part in the research you will need to complete this online survey.

The survey should take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary and any information given will remain totally confidential and will only be used by researchers and stakeholders involved in the project. The findings from the research will be published in a report; however, the data from the survey will be presented in aggregate form only, so neither you nor your organisation will be identifiable from the results.

Click on this link to access the online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SocEntKirklees

If you feel you are not the most appropriate person to respond on behalf of your organisation, please forward this email to a colleague (however we only need one response from each organisation.) If you would prefer to complete a paper copy of the questionnaire or would prefer to respond over the telephone then please contact the Survey Centre on the number below. Please note the final submission date is Friday 13th September 2019.

The project is funded by Higher Education Innovation Funding and is a partnership between Leeds Beckett University and WYCA. Advice and oversight is provided by the School for Social Entrepreneurs Yorkshire and the North East and Social Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber (SEYH). The research has been reviewed and approved under LBU’s research ethics process. If you have any questions about the study please contact Penny Wymer on 0113 8121960 or p.wymer@leedsbeckett.ac.uk If you have any technical issues, or queries about how to complete the questionnaire, please contact the Survey Research Centre on (0113) 812 1960 or email m.p.reynolds@leedsbeckett.ac.uk

The answers vary from community to community but here at CUP we support people in disadvantaged areas to create great community activities.

Our work develops strengths, builds skills and opens up routes to training and qualifications.

We create change. It starts with community activities and ends with stronger, more resilient individuals and groups.
