Business Development and Delivery Manager (Permanent – 15 hours per week with potential to increase hours)

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer you will focus on all aspects of our externally focused business development and delivery across Calderdale and Kirklees.

You will be expected to develop and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with a wide range of funders, commissioners and partners to promote collaborative opportunities and develop new business in line with our vision and mission.  You will also be responsible for ensuring all of our contracted delivery is meeting performance requirements through effective management of delivery teams to promote individual ownership of roles and responsibilities with a focus on continuous improvement.  You will ensure that all aspects of our work demonstrate impact and quality outcomes.

You will collaborate closely with the Business Support and Development Manager to ensure that the internal frameworks and processes are continually reviewed and improved to promote efficient ways of working. You will work closely with the Quality for Health Manager to ensure all aspects of delivery and development link into and promote the Quality for Health award.

Business Support and Development Manager (Permanent – 15 hours per week with potential to increase hours)

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for improving our internal business practices. You will be accountable for creating greater efficiencies and increase the quality of our service delivery. You will also play a key role in driving new business initiatives to ensure we fulfil our vision and mission.

You will focus on all aspects of HR process, finance, IT, quality assurance, communications and the estates function, providing line management of the core business roles of Finance Officer, Communications Officer and Senior Administrator and will be responsible for Delivery Teams on an ‘as required’ basis.

You will collaborate closely with the Business Development and Delivery Manager to contribute to income growth targets, identifying opportunities and capitalising on new income streams.  You will work closely with the Quality for Health Manager to ensure all aspects of delivery and development link into and promote the Quality for Health award.

Engagement Coordinator (Fixed term until March 2020 – 24 hours per week – good potential for contract extension and additional hours)

Reporting to the Business Development & Delivery Manager, you will develop and deliver a range of projects and activities to involve and promote the participation of the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) and wider communities in a range of engagement activities linked to local NHS priorities and Engagement Strategy.

You will act as point of contact for VAC and working closely with the NHS engagement team. You will actively promote the recruitment of ‘community based assets’, train the assets to qualify as Community/Engagement Champions and co-ordinate a range of engagement activity/projects (working with the team) in partnership with Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield CCGs.

You will have line management responsibility for the Engagement Officer, Engagement Administrator and associated engagement staff as part of this role.

Help Us Spread The Word: New Friendship Group for Adults in Kirklees

Join us for a Summer of Fun with Friendlees

TSL Kirklees, in partnership with Happy U, has launched a new pilot project, with seed funding from Kirklees Council.  The idea behind Friendlees is that any of us, whatever age, due to circumstances beyond our control and life changes such as a bereavement, divorce or moving house, can find ourselves lonely or isolated and in need of some new friends to socialise with.

Friendlees host and co-ordinator, Kelly Williams says:

We all know what it feels like to want to go to that new show, film or gig, but not have anyone to go with.  Friendlees will help you make connections and find shared interest without it being scary.  We want everyone to feel welcome, relaxed and pleased that they came along – and you never know, you might find a few new friends along the way.

The project is being launched with a series of 6 free events and activities all over Kirklees, including walks, trips, music, dancing, and sing-along cinema.  In addition, people can join the Friendlees group on Facebook, and host a coffee catch-up or pub meet-up in their local area and invite other members to join them, or they can suggest events that they’d like to go to and see if other members would like to go along.

The Summer of Fun events, run between June and September, starting with a 5.5 mile Castle Hill walk on 23rd June, with coffee stop at the top whilst admiring the view, and optional pint at The Golden Cock in Farnley Tyas.

Growing Great Places is a new community crowdfunding programme to support citizens and organisations who have great ideas for making our local places even better. Kirklees Council are pledging £50k of funding over the next year, plus advice and support to help you run a great crowdfunding campaign.

You might have a little idea that can have a big impact by bringing a place together. Or you might need some help growing support for an ambitious project that’s just getting started.

We want to make sure that she’s aware of the range of vital and innovative work our members do in this field and so we’ll be presenting short case studies from some of our members. And as ever, there’ll be chance to network over tea and cake, make connections and build relationships, and find out who’s doing what in Kirklees.

In addition Groundwork will be telling us how groups in Kirklees can apply for grants of up to £20k for innovative projects around encouraging people into work, training & education (similar to our own Community Learning Works project).

Fundraising Regulator Updates Code of Practice

11th June 2019

The Fundraising Regulator has launched a “new and improved” Code of Fundraising Practice which will come into effect in October 2019, reports www.charityupdate.co.uk. 

The changes are said to be designed to make it easier for fundraisers, charities and third-party organisations to understand the standards expected of them when fundraising. The regulator added the new code is also easier for the public to navigate, so that they know what to expect from ethical fundraising.

Report Says Charities Need to Do More on Bullying

11th June 2019

Charity leaders should initiate a sector-wide discussion about bullying and workplace culture;

and every charity should nominate at least one trustee and one senior manager to lead the organisation’s approach to staff workplace wellbeing, according to a new report, says www.charitytimes.com.

The report, In Plain Sight, published by ACEVO and the Centre for Mental Health, assessed the experiences of bullying among 524 respondents to an online survey; and 20 people with whom the researchers conducted in-depth interviews. All examples of bullying occurred within registered charities in England and Wales during the past five years.

Two Vacancies for People with Business, Marketing or Income Generation Expertise

We currently have 2 vacancies within the Home-Start Kirklees board of trustees following the retirement of a long standing member and a recent resignation.  To ensure that we consistently remain quorate across committee meetings, we are seeking the skills and experience needed to complement our existing members, therefore we would be most interested in hearing from potential trustees who would fit within the following areas of expertise:-

• Knowledge and experience of either corporate or small business,
• Social media and marketing
• Fundraising and generating income

We would particularly welcome volunteers from the following demographic population:-

• Resides or works within the North Kirklees area (Dewsbury, Batley, Spen areas)
• Representative of the BME population
• Male gender

A commitment  to the role would entail attending a monthly board meeting and a quarterly sub-committee meeting as well as leading on specific items in-between meetings as and when  dependent upon need.

Labour promises more grant funding and time off for trustees

10th June 2019

According to www.thirdsector.co.uk, the civil society strategy, From Paternalism to Participation, published today says that:

Labour would increase grant funding to charities, allow trustees to take time off work and give local communities greater control over decisions, according to the party’s long-awaited civil society strategy.

The article also states that:

Labour pledges to reverse the decline in the number of community spaces. The document says the Conservative government has closed down 400 day centres, 500 public libraries, 600 youth centres and 1,000 children’s centres since it took power in 2010.

It goes on to say that:

Charity trustees would also receive equal status in law to that of school governors and councillors, allowing them to take time off to carry out their duties, the document says.

and,

The document reiterates Labour’s commitment to repeal the controversial lobbying act, which the sector has argued stifles its ability to campaign freely.

It says instead that the act would be replaced with a Community Empowerment Charter that encourages civil society organisations to campaign.

You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth day to day operations of the food bank; this is an exciting role with varied responsibilities, in which no two days are the same.

• To provide leadership, direction and supervision to the team delivering The Welcome Centre’s food bank service at our Lord Street site.
• To ensure food bank stock is received, stored, transported, and distributed efficiently and safely
• To ensure The Welcome Centre’s food bank service is high quality and client focused, identifying and implementing opportunities for service improvement.

About The Welcome Centre
The Welcome Centre is a large, independent food bank in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. We’re one of the largest food banks in the north of England. We have a team of five staff working across two sites, supported by almost 100 volunteers. Each year we support thousands of people in crisis in our community. Everyone we support is referred to us from one of our frontline partner agencies, and once people are referred to us we provide practical support including food, toiletries, and other essential items. We also offer people one to one advocacy, guidance and support to help them address any underlying or ongoing issues which prevent them getting back on their feet. Accu (who specialise in supplying engineering components) have their head office in Huddersfield and contacted
Volunteering Kirklees hoping to do some volunteering with a local charity.

On the 23rd April 2019, three members of staff attended Richmond Fellowship (an organisation that supports people with mental health issues) and used their skills and expertise to deliver a job skills workshop which covered CV writing, job search and IT assistance. The session was a huge success.

Third Sector Jobs: English Language Programme Co-ordinator

Third Sector Leaders Kirklees (TSLK) have an exciting opportunity for an English Language Programme Co-ordinator. 

The programme co-ordinator will be leading a partnership project to increase access across Kirklees to suitable, supported and quality ESOL provision with appropriate progression routes.  This is a collaboration between Kirklees Council and TSLK funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.  The programme co-ordinator will be leading on establishing, developing and reporting on the English Language Co-ordination Service pilot.

The post is temporary for 12 months, 37 hours a week:  Salary Scale SCP 38 £40,760

The successful candidate will have a relevant degree and hold a TESOL Certificate or Diploma or equivalent level qualification along with experience of successfully managing programmes in the ESOL curriculum area.

Be Part of the Development of National Safeguarding Resources for the Third Sector

The National Lottery Community Fund has awarded funding to the Safer Social Sector Partnership (SSP) to fund the creation of a comprehensive suite of free safeguarding tools and advice for the voluntary sector. Ann Craft Trust as a member of the SSP has taken on the task of producing the adult safeguarding resources. as part of the project, and would like your help.  They’ve created 2 surveys:
