A message from our ceo, michael pitchford

Dear TSL Members,

I’ve just completed 5 months at TSL Kirklees and am deeply grateful for the support I’ve received from so many of you. I am acutely aware that I’ve come in at a time of crisis for the sector. We are seeing cuts and closures for many groups. Lots of you are facing huge uncertainty whilst trying to cope with escalating demand. I know it is overwhelming.

At the same time, I’ve seen some fantastic work going on in communities, strong relationships across organisations, and a real sense of determination and resilience. This sense of togetherness and solidarity will be vital as we move forward.

TSL Kirklees has done some great work over the years, but it too is facing significant cuts and uncertainties. We will need to change, both to adapt to the financial context but also to ensure we are providing what is needed in a challenging environment.

My priorities are to clarify TSL’s strategy and funding going forward, rooted in what is needed from the sector. I’ve met a large number of you but am keen to see many more of you. We have work to do to clarify what membership of TSL means, to ensure that sector representation is diverse accountable, and that we are able to articulate our collective value. We need to collaborate as well as develop a powerful collective voice.

In this context, I would like to hold a series of conversations with TSL member organisations to set out TSL’s direction of travel, hear about your challenges and successes, explore how we support one another through these times, and what you need from us going forward. I envisage a discussion of 12-15 individuals from different TSL member organisations – any more and it’s hard to have a proper dialogue.

I’ve no idea how many of you will have the time and appetite for such a conversation. We will hold two initial conversations – one in North Kirklees and one in South Kirklees (first come first served) and put on more if there is demand.

The two dates are:

  • Thursday 18th July at Brian Jackson House, Huddersfield: 10am-12pm
  • Wednesday 24th July, Ravensthorpe Community Centre, Dewsbury: 2pm-4pm

If you’d like to chat on a 1-1 basis, outside of these meetings, please drop me a line – michael@tslkirklees.org.uk.

Looking forward to meeting you,

Michael

The Big Help Out - Funding for Taster Activities

The Big Help Out is returning this year and will take place at the end of Volunteers’ Week from Friday 7th – Sunday 9th June. The aim of this high profile national campaign is to offer taster activities that can encourage new people into volunteering.

We would like to support three taster activities across Kirklees during The Big Help Out and can offer £250 per organisation to contribute to the costs of running a taster event including materials and refreshments.

What could a taster event look like?

It could be a practical activity for example…

  • If you are a gardening group you could organise a litter pick or seed planting session.
  • If you run activity groups with people you could organise an activity to help prepare for your groups such as putting together information packs, preparing craft materials etc.
  • If you are looking for retail volunteers then you could offer a clothes sorting team session.

If it would be difficult for you to deliver a practical activity it could be more of an information session for example…

  • A coffee and cake information session where people can meet your current volunteers and find out about your organisation and how volunteers can get involved.

If you are considering holding a Big Help Out Taster event and would like to find out more about accessing some funds please email: becky@tslkirklees.org.uk.

Community buildings and energy project 2023 - book now to find out more...

join us on wednesday 14th june, 10am to 12pm in huddersfield

In 2021, TSL Kirklees conducted a Community Buildings Survey, identifying over 200 community spaces, most run by smaller community organisations.

Since then we have all seen a dramatic increase in energy bills for households, businesses and community organisations. At the recent community buildings network meeting it was agreed that energy costs were now the priority.

Community buildings play a vital role in community wellbeing, bringing people together to support each other and provide services – often reaching those who do not get help elsewhere.

The TSL Kirklees Community Buildings and Energy Project 2023 will seek funding and support to:

  • Help community-managed buildings to reduce energy use & cost and share learning
  • Help organisations to access technical advice, building audits, installers and suppliers
  • Help organisations to access grants, loans and other finance for energy improvement works
  • Involve community buildings in supporting local households to reduce energy use & cost
  • The next meeting about this project is on the 14 June, 10am at the Methodist Mission, Lord St, Huddersfield. I hope you can come.

To register your interest in this project and to complete the new Community Buildings Survey adding information about energy use, please go to our online form at:

Thanks again for everything you do in our community.

Please share this story to help reach all community run buildings in Kirklees.

Consultation on Kirklees Environmental Strategy 3-14 Apr

Kirklees Council is developing an Environmental Strategy for Kirklees. The Council is working with Creative Concern to engage diverse local people in the development of the strategy.

If you want your group or organisation to have a say, now is the time to get involved. There’s not long as it is going through the Council approval process very soon.

Here is the invite Powerpoint

Here’s the invite text: “We’re forming a new Environmental Strategy and Sustainability Vision for Kirklees and we are interested in getting your community’s input. The strategy aims to make sure the environment is a priority, underpinning everything they do, from health, wellbeing, economy, green spaces and communities.

We would like to make sure everyone has a voice in the development of this strategy, getting feedback on the impact it could have on everyday lives of local people. As such, we’re conducting a series of community panels, reaching out to wide range of local groups and organisations to make sure all communities in Kirklees are represented, particularly those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to have their say. We’re getting in touch as we feel that your group / organisation has strong links to these communities, and their input (and yours) could be invaluable in shaping a more sustainable future of Kirklees and its residents!

The primary focus of this is about listening to people in the community and gathering their thoughts. We wanted to start a conversation with you about how to connect with people who haven’t yet been part of the discussions so far and whether you think they’d be interested in taking part in something like this.

We’ve listed some of the communities we’re interested in talking to (but not specifically limited to) and particularly in engaging with younger people (16-25) and / or groups of different ethnic backgrounds from these communities:

  • Batley
  • Dewsbury
  • Heckmondwike
  • Birtsall
  • Birkenshaw and Liversedge & Gomersal
  • Huddersfield

There will be a small series of sessions conducted between 3rd April and 14th April. Final dates have not been confirmed yet but we expect each session could last up to 2 hours. The format and location of these sessions are yet to be decided, but could be held virtually or done in-person, depending on what you think might work best for the group.”

Free Menopause Support Sessions

Menopause and You!

We know that we face significant challenges around retention of our workforce, wellbeing and absence and menopause can be a very real factor in people opting to leave or reduce their hours in order to ‘cope’ with their symptoms. At West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, we are working together to support our workforce and raise awareness around menopause. team kickstart wins first kirklees social enterprise start-up competition

Local Grassroots Community Interest Company wins £5000 towards a new project

Joy & Junior from Team KickStart receive their prize

Sheepridge-based Team KickStart has won the first Kirklees Social Enterprise Competition. The grassroots Community Interest Company (CIC) provides activities for local young people to get them off the streets and stop them getting into crime and anti-social behaviour. They now want to become less reliant on grant funding and aim to develop new projects that can bring in an income whilst still involving and supporting young people. Their first idea is to develop an online shop selling refurbished motorbike parts that is run by the young people themselves and gives them hands-on skills, work experience and qualifications.

The judges liked that, ‘Team KickStart have a good idea and clear aims that involve young people throughout’.

The competition was run by a new partnership of local organisations that want to encourage and support more social enterprise in Kirklees. 12 local people and groups, with big ideas to support their local communities, took part in a series of free business development webinars over the Summer and then were invited to pitch their polished plans to a panel of local experts. Three finalists were chosen to pitch again, and the winner was announced at a special event celebrating local social enterprise, with food provided by Full Circle Community Cafe (run by Healthy Hearts (Women’s Wellbeing) CIC), and an inspirational talk and runners-up prizes provided by Hive Huddersfield CIC .

The 3 finalists were:

  • Team KickStart (Kick Start Project CIC) – see video below to find out more
  • Laid Bear Recovery CIC (Will Halstead) – see vide below to find out more
  • CollaborARTi

Hilary Thompson, from TSL Kirklees and Chair of the Kirklees Social Enterprise Sounding Board, who ran the competition said, ‘This was the starting point for a new project to support and encourage more social enterprise in Kirklees. For lots of reasons, Kirklees has fewer social enterprises that other areas, but we know that not-for-profit and community businesses are great for the local economy, creating local jobs and supporting local people, and so it’s in our interest to make sure we have as many as possible. Our ambition is to make Kirklees into a social enterprise place, which means that we’re committed to investing in social enterprises so that they can thrive and grow. The Social Enterprise Sounding Board is the start of that work.’

The Kirklees Social Enterprise Sounding Board is a partnership of local organisations that want to support and encourage more social enterprise in Kirklees – including, local social enterprises, Locala Health and Wellbeing and Local Services 2 You (LS2Y), local third sector infrastructure support charity, TSL Kirklees, Kirklees Council and Huddersfield University. The support package was put together and led by social investor, Key Fund with additional sessions delivered by TSL Kirklees and local accounting charity, WYCAS.

Social enterprise success for kirklees!

Two local social enterprises have won awards at this year’s Social Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber (SEYH), beating off strong competition from all over the region.

Start Up Award Winners, Umbrella Yoga CIC

The winners were:

  • Umbrella Yoga CIC who won the Start Up Award for their work bringing communities together through yoga and making it accessible for people with additional needs
  • Proper job who won the Social Impact Award for their unique LAB Project that uses theatre and drama skills to support and nurture individuals from the local community across Yorkshire and the North West. They were commended for ‘their stakeholder engagement and how they gather evidence in a number of ways’.
Social Impact Award Winners, Proper Job

They were joined on the night by 3 other Kirklees-based finalists:

  • Our Creative Connection who were also shortlisted for the Start Up Award for their work using photography to give people a voice, support people’s health and wellbeing, and bring about social change.
  • Liverpool-based Employability Solutions who were also shortlisted for the Social Impact Award for their work offering flexible and tailored alternative education provision across Kirklees.
  • and Cowlersley Community Out of School Club who were shortlisted for the Social Investment Award, having raised funding to buy a local disused care home and expand their services offering affordable, accessible childcare.

Helen Orlic, Social Enterprise Lead for TSL Kirklees said, ‘This is great news for Kirklees. We had finalists in 3 of the 7 categories this year and a quarter of the 20 finalists were from Kirklees, which is pretty impressive when you consider that Kirklees is one of the smaller local authorities in the region. Generally, Kirklees lags behind other areas, such as Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford when it comes to social enterprise, which is why we’re working with a partnership of organisations, including Kirklees Council and Huddersfield University to look at ways of encouraging more not-for-profit businesses in Kirklees – the types of businesses that are good for both the local economy and local communities.’

If you’d like to be kept up to date with this work and the latest social enterprise news, please email comms@tslkirklees.org.uk and ask to be added to our social enterprise network mailing list.

Promotional offer from Kirklees council

for groups that are supporting people who are struggling with rising costs

Kirklees Council has set-up a one-stop shop website to give people advice and information about how to deal with the rising cost of living. The site will also signpost people to local charities and community groups that can support them with finances and debt advice, reducing energy bills or food.

If you have a service that you’d like to promote or appeal that you’d like to make, please contact Ben Holman – ben.holman@kirklees.gov.uk. They can use any of their channels (newsletters, social media, video, photos, PR) to help profile your organisation, showcase your work, connect people together, target a particular audience, and generally promote you and your services. (The only thing that they probably can’t do is help you fundraise.)

A recent profile of Uniform Exchange and it’s founder, Kate French, helped them raise their profile and recruit more essential volunteers.

TSL Chair showcases TSL Kirklees community anchor network at partnership conference

plus Opportunity for organisations to share their partnership stories and host ‘Shaped By People’ workshops

We were delighted that our Chair, Andy Petrie from LS2Y was asked to be the Keynote Speaker at this year’s Picture of Kirklees Partnership Conference earlier this month. The event brought together key Council staff, elected members and over 100 partner organisations (including representatives from our sector and Lead and Local Community Anchors) to explore the Council’s new shared outcome, ‘Shaped By People’, and a new aim to ‘Work Alongside’. It also gave us the opportunity to celebrate the great work that our sector is doing in communities and showcase the fantastic work that our TSL Kirklees Community Anchors are doing to support local grassroots organisations and meet local needs.

Andy’s speech included 2 short case studies videos about Community Anchor work in Ashbrow (with Lead Huddersfield Anchor, LS2Y) and Thornton Lodge (with Local Anchor, Thornton Lodge Action Group). (See below)

GEt involved

As part of the process to move towards more partnership working and involving local citizens, the Council’s Local Democracy Team are looking for:

  • Organisations to host workshops where local people can share their stories and experiences of ‘Shaped By People’
  • And stories of organisations ‘Working Alongside’ each other to make local places better for the people who work, live and play there.

If you are interested in taking part, please email Democracy@Kirklees.gov.uk.

One Community Foundation seeks trustees

One Community Foundation gives grants to community organisations across Kirklees. Funds sometimes come from businesses or wealthy individuals and sometimes from public bodies or charitable trusts. The Foundation aims to keep administrative costs down so that more money meets local needs.

We’re currently looking for new trustees – that is, volunteers at the highest level of our charity, ensuring the charity is working legally and effectively.

To be a trustee, you don’t need to be an expert or have done something like this before as you’ll learn loads as you go along. If you are willing and able to work together with other trustees to make the right decisions for the charity, then you can be a trustee.

Trustees can be all ages, backgrounds, abilities, cultures, experiences and views.  In fact, we believe a diverse group of trustees can help the charity to see options and problems from different perspectives, and so help us to make better decisions.

Trustees are expected to attend board meetings and also to take part in the panels that make decisions about where grants go. You will need to respond to emails between meetings and be able to prepare and read the papers for meetings so you can play your part. In total, you may need to give half a day a month on average.

Being a trustee is a fantastic way to contribute to your community and make a difference to disadvantaged people’s lives. You’ll develop strategic management, collective decision making and other valuable skills, and you’ll grow in confidence.

You can be a One Community Trustee and still be involved in other community organisations – including those who receive grants from the Foundation. We have processes for managing conflicts of interest.

The closing date for formally expressing interest in being a trustee and sending in your CV is Fri 5 Aug. Take the first step and email Emma@one-community.org.uk to arrange an informal chat with the CEO, Emma Woods-Bolger.

We’re facing an exciting and challenging future and it would be great if you could be part of it. You can find out more about One Community at www.one-community.org.uk.
