Make the right choice to help take the pressure off the NHS

The NHS in Kirklees is reminding people to make the right choice when seeking medical help, to reduce pressure on NHS services.

Health services across the region are currently in very high demand. They are also dealing with COVID-19 related staff absences as well as supporting the COVID-19 vaccination programme.

GP practices remain open but may take longer to answer phone calls and schedule appointments. They are continuing to triage patients to ensure that those with the greatest need are seen first. When you contact your practice, trained staff will ask a number of questions to ensure that you receive the most appropriate support. If you are able, please use the online services on your practice’s website.

If you have an urgent medical condition, but it’s not an emergency, you should contact NHS111 by phone or go online at 111.nhs.uk. You should call 999 when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk. This includes situations such as severe bleeding, head injury or if you think it could be a heart attack or stroke.

Community pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals who can offer advice on the best treatment for common health conditions such as colds, rashes and tummy aches. They can also help you to ensure you have a fully stocked first aid kit to help you treat minor conditions at home. You can find information on what to keep in your first aid kit on the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/accidents-first-aid-and-treatments/what-should-i-keep-in-my-first-aid-kit/. Use the pharmacy finder to locate your nearest pharmacy: www.togetherwe-can.com/find-a-pharmacy/.

If you are concerned about your or someone else’s mental health you can get help from the 24-hour mental health helpline by calling 0800 183 0558. This is a free and confidential service and is available to anyone registered with a GP in Kirklees. Children and young people can also use the NightOWLS service by calling 0300 2003900. This service is available from 8pm-8am. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms should book a test by visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119.

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, it is important to get vaccinated. Clinics across Kirklees are open and offering first and second doses as well as booster jabs. You can book an appointment at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination or visit a walk-in. Find your nearest walk-in at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/find-a-walk-in-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-site/.

Dr Khalid Naeem, Clinical Chair of Kirklees CCG and local GP said, “NHS services are extremely busy. If you’re unwell or injured, it’s important to choose the right service to make sure you get the best treatment as quickly as possible. There are a wide range of options available. You may not need to see your GP or go to A&E.

“I’d urge people to use the information available on www.togetherwe-can.com. It’s a really useful tool that could make all the difference to you and your family.”
