Success for Community Anchor Supported Groups in Thornton Lodge and Crosland Moor
The Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund awards almost £68k to 4 local groups
Local Community Anchor for Huddersfield, Thornton Lodge Action Group has successfully supported 3 local groups to receive significant funds from the latest round of The Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund.
Independent Children and Families Services (ICAFS) received almost £20k for their Empowering Lives project that will reach out to vulnerable men and boys and steer them away from criminal exploitation, including grooming, county lines and cuckooing. It will also give them financial advice and help them address personal barriers (such as low literacy levels or lack of digital skills and connectivity) that push them towards criminal behaviour.
Yorkshire Wellbeing and Skills received almost £17K for their Safe Zone project to address the safety of women and girls in Thornton Lodge. They will use the money to set up a Safe Zone at Thornton Lodge Community Centre, and provide a weekly drop-in.
Masoom Care received £15k for their Gemz project that will engage and keep young carers safe from harmful behaviour, exploitation and abuse, and provide them with a safe place to enjoy their youth.
And Thornton Lodge Action Group itself received almost £16k for its Safer Places project which will provide a range of gym-based and physical activities for teenage boys that will allow them to let off steam whilst raising awareness of the risks around and empowering them with healthier attitudes.
Kirklees Success
In total, 20 organisations from Kirklees were successful in receiving grants totalling around £303k for projects ranging from early intervention sensory play and mindfulness for children in deprived areas to domestic abuse recovery programmes, educational theatre projects, learning mentors for care leavers and open access support for young adults identifying as LGBTQ+.
