TSL Kirklees Volunteering is the official Volunteer Centre for Kirklees
This means that we’re here to help you get started on your volunteering journey and support you through the process.
We also make sure that any groups or charities that advertise for volunteers on our website will look after their volunteers properly. Some of them will have a stamp of approval called the Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award (KVQA), which means that they’ve done even more to make sure that their volunteers are valued and have a good experience.

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice supports children with life-shortening conditions and their families across West Yorkshire.
We’re here for any family confronted with the news their child has a life-shortening condition, however, wherever and whenever they need us. By providing superb nursing care, hydrotherapy, creative therapy, days out, memory making, end of life care, bereavement support and counselling, Forget Me Not helps families make the most of every moment they have together.
We need to raise over £4 million a year to keep doing what we do – and with less than 6% of that coming from the government, we rely on our local community to help us continue to be here for the children and families who need us.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rates us as ‘outstanding’. This puts us in the top 1% of all of the organisations they inspect.
This role can be based at the Hospice HD2 1NH, and you can also carry out tasks at home.
Role Purpose
To support the Activity Coordinator by researching and pulling together suggestions for family activities, events and experiences. We are looking for volunteers to help us build a bank of ideas and information that will contribute to the planning of meaningful and inclusive activities for children and families supported by the hospice.
Key Responsibilities
- Research ideas for activities and events based on monthly themes and seasonal events, considering whether they are inclusive, age-appropriate and suitably accessible for children with complex needs and their families
- Identify potential:
- Activity providers, entertainers and workshop leaders
- Themed event decorations and play resources (e.g. messy play resources)
- Companies or organisations offering donations, discounts, or free opportunities (we love a bargain!)
- Local and national attractions, venues, and experiences
- Present ideas clearly (for example via email, shared documents, or idea lists) so they can be easily reviewed and developed further by the Activity Coordinator
- Gather practical details where possible (e.g. approximate costs and proximity to the hospice)
- Use our volunteer app, 'Volunteero', to book shifts, log your gifted volunteering hours (as this also helps us apply for addition funding for the hospice), communicate with staff, and stay up to date with training and updates
- Follow hospice policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, infection control, and confidentiality
Will I be able to help out at the events I help plan?
Absolutely! We always appreciate an extra pair of hands and we would love for our volunteers to see their ideas come to life!
Skills
- Good communication skills
- Comfortable completing tasks with minimal supervision
- Organised and able to manage time effectively
- Able to work effectively as part of a team
- If you choose to attend family activities / events, we would request that you be comfortable assisting with practical tasks such as setting up tables and resources, lifting light equipment (with support if required) and helping to tidy up at the end
Do I need any experience?
No specific qualifications are required. An interest in activities, family events, or community resources is helpful. Any relevant experience (such as event planning, research, or working with families) is welcomed but not essential. Having good IT skills would be highly beneficial as this role will involve a lot of online researching.
Qualities
- Creative, curious and imaginative
- Reliable, organised and trustworthy
- Warm, approachable and friendly with a willingness to take guidance
- Sensitive to the needs of children with complex medical conditions and respectful of the diversity of the families we serve
- Flexible and adaptable with a warm sense of humour
- Willing to continue learning and developing
Training and Support
- Induction and role‑specific training provided
- Safeguarding and health & safety training
- Ongoing support and guidance from the Activity Coordinator
- Opportunities to develop skills and gain experience in a children's hospice environment
Expectations
This role requires an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references. Volunteers must adhere to the hospice’s safeguarding policies at all times. You will also be asked to complete e-learning as part of our mandatory training process.
What happens next?
If you are interested in this role, please apply and a member of the team will give you a call and arrange an informal interview.
If you are successful, you will need to complete a DBS check and provide 2 satisfactory references. Before you start, you will also need to complete a series of mandatory eLearning modules.
