TSL Kirklees Volunteering is the official Volunteer Centre for Kirklees
This means that we’re here to help you get started on your volunteering journey and support you through the process.
We also make sure that any groups or charities that advertise for volunteers on our website will look after their volunteers properly. Some of them will have a stamp of approval called the Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award (KVQA), which means that they’ve done even more to make sure that their volunteers are valued and have a good experience.

Museum's Mission Statement
The National Coal Mining Museum for England aims to keep coal mining alive by collecting and preserving the industry’s rich heritage, creating enjoyable and inspiring ways to learn for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
Objectives of the Charity
To advance the education of the public in the history of mining in England by the provision and maintenance of a museum both underground and on the surface at the former Caphouse Colliery for the demonstration of past and contemporary mining methods and the exhibition of machinery and other items connected with mining and industrial archaeology.
Are you passionate about heritage, community, or simply love sharing stories and experiences with others? The National Coal Mining Museum offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests.
Our volunteers play a vital role in helping us preserve and share the rich history of coal mining. Whether you enjoy meeting visitors, getting hands-on with collections, working outdoors, or supporting learning activities, there’s a place for you in our team.
Opportunities include:
🪨 Visitor Engagement – helping to bring the stories of mining to life through conversation, interpretation, and tours.
🎓 Learning and Education – supporting school visits and family activities such as our under 5s sessions.
🛠️ Collections and Archives – assisting behind the scenes with the care and cataloguing of our objects and documents.
🌳 Pit wood – getting stuck in with practical work in our outdoor spaces, wildlife areas, and gardens.
🎉 Events and Public Programmes – lending a hand at special events and seasonal activities.
Whether you can give a few hours a week or just help out occasionally, volunteering with us is a great way to meet new people, develop skills, and make a real difference.
Interested? Find out more and register your interest below, we’d love to hear from you! Don’t see a role that’s quite right for you? Get in touch — we can often shape opportunities around your skills and interests.
