TSL Kirklees Volunteering is the official Volunteer Centre for Kirklees
This means that we’re here to help you get started on your volunteering journey and support you through the process.
We also make sure that any groups or charities that advertise for volunteers on our website will look after their volunteers properly. Some of them will have a stamp of approval called the Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award (KVQA), which means that they’ve done even more to make sure that their volunteers are valued and have a good experience.

Kirklees Register Office is responsible for recording all births, marriages, and deaths that take place within the district. As part of this role, we hold registration appointments with members of the public to register births, deaths, and notices of marriage at our offices in the Civic Centre and Dewsbury Town Hall. We also officiate civil wedding ceremonies across the district. In addition, we organise and conduct British Citizenship ceremonies for residents of Kirklees.
Our responsibilities also include managing and preserving historical records dating back nearly 200 years, to the start of civil registration in England and Wales in 1837. We issue birth, marriage, and death certificates from these original records to individuals who need them for personal use or family history research.
Producing birth, marriage and death certificates, locating original records, particularly for the earlier years of registration, can be challenging and very time consuming. The volunteering project is therefore to index original records onto our online system to help increase efficiency. This will also enable us to better support customers who do not know exact details when ordering certificates for legal or family history purposes. Some customers need extra help accessing our services, so part of the role also includes assisting customers with certificate orders and appointment bookings. Your contribution will make it easier for people to access important documents and connect with their past.
What you’ll be doing:
- Entering names, dates, and reference numbers from the original handwritten registers into our computer system (basic computer skills are helpful).
- Assisting customers with ordering certificates or booking appointments.
- Working alongside another volunteer—so you’ll always have someone to collaborate with. You can even apply with a friend!
Why volunteer with us?
- Make a real difference in preserving local heritage.
- Gain new skills and experience.
- Flexible hours to suit your schedule.
- Full training and ongoing support provided.
If you’re passionate about helping others and want to be part of a friendly team making a positive impact, we’d love to hear from you!
