COVID-19 Essential Volunteering Information

COVID-19 Volunteering Opportunities

There are many ways you can help out in your community at this difficult time. Some organisations, like the NHS, need emergency volunteers to keep services running, and new mutual aid groups working in your community need helpers to befriend people in isolation, and do everyday tasks like shopping.

ANNOUNCING: New Co-ordinated Community Response from Kirklees Council & TSL Kirklees

Including new helpline, online forms, response teams & support from local groups

Our Community Response helpline is open

We’ve opened a new dedicated helpline as part of our Covic-19 Community Response.

We’re working alongside our citizens and local organisations to make sure that together we can all support our neighbours and communities over the coming weeks. We’re working especially closely with local voluntary sector organisations through our partners at Volunteering Kirklees (part of Third Sector Leaders).

Together we’ve developed a co-ordinated Community Response, including a Kirklees Council helpline and online forms that anyone can use to either request help, or to offer support to others. Our response teams in local places will be matching requests for help with offers of support, so that we can work together to support the most vulnerable in our communities.

How to request support or offer support

Please let us know about the things you (or someone who you are concerned about) need help with. You can also tell us how you (or your organisation) can support others.

The helpline will initially be open from 8am to 6pm weekdays. We will review this daily. You can share information with us online at any time.

Support for local groups

We are listening to what local mutual aid groups and voluntary organisations need so that we can offer more support and advice where needed. Our partners at Volunteering Kirklees are also here to support you if your organisation needs urgent help from more volunteers. Your organisation can promote volunteering opportunities on the Volunteering Kirklees website, or ask for advice and learn from what other organisations are doing. If you’d like to help a local organisation through this difficult time, you can sign up to be a volunteer.

What to do if your organisation has suffered financially

Charities hit financially by coronavirus will be able to apply will be able to apply for government loans if more than half their income comes from trading activity.

Those that require an extension to their annual return deadline should contact the Charity Commission.

In a statement from the Commission: “The charity sector will face challenges of looking after its staff, volunteers and trustees who may fall ill, have to self-isolate, or have to look after loved ones.

“The sector has a vital role to play in looking after its beneficiaries, many of whom will be amongst the most vulnerable during this public health emergency.

“We want to assure charities that our approach to regulation during this period will be as flexible and supportive as possible. Charities’ primary interest, and ours, must be looking after the public and the communities that we serve.

“Charities can feel confident that we will, where possible, act in a pragmatic way by taking account of the wider public interest during this unprecedented period.”

“This means that charities that are due to submit an annual return in the near future, but do not think they will be able to do so, can ask the regulator for a filing extension.”

Covid19: Emergency Support & Funding

Details of Emergency Funding & Support for Local Charities, Community Groups, Voluntary Organisations & Social Enterprises

On this page we’ll list new emergency funding pots as they become available. You can also get in touch with us if you need help.

Grants Online is also compiling a UK-wide emergency funding list.  We’ll make sure that we list details here of all the main funds, however, if you don’t find what you’re looking for, it might be worth having a look at their fuller list.

Over 200 funders have signed a pledge to support the organisations that they already fund.  They have recognised that activities may changee and that targets and deadlines may be missed, or that you may have to use funds differently and they have agreed to be reasonable and flexible in their approach to that.  It’s important though, that you speak to your funders about your plans or issues as soon as you can.

Find out more about the pledge and which funders have signed it

Health Inequalities Funding

The NHS West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health Inequalities Fund will launch on Tuesday 28 April is to help reduce the gap in health equality across the area.

Up to £450,000 of funds will be available to voluntary and community organisations across Bradford and Craven; Calderdale, Harrogate, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. It aims to help tackle the impact of COVID-19 on people’s health and wellbeing.

Voluntary and community organisations are invited to apply for grant funding for up to £50,000. Six funds will be available for up to £25,000, with another six grants between £25,000 and £50,000.

The fund welcomes innovative ideas, which deliver a partnership approach to reducing health inequalities by working across health and voluntary and community sector (VCS) partners.

We are looking for sustainable interventions that go beyond the immediate impacts of the pandemic, seek to address the medium to longer term impacts on inequalities and increase resilience of individuals and communities.

The funding will focus on priority population groups that we believe may be disproportionately affected through the COVID-19 pandemic. These groups are:

• Low income families and those families, who now find themselves in financial hardship as a result of COVID-19.

• People aged over 55 years living in areas ranked as being in the 10% most deprived nationally.

• People living with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and Autism.

Applicants must be able to show that they are addressing a specific need in their community.

Making them smile- Kulsoom's Story

HOW DID YOU START VOLUNTEERING?

Kulsoom found out about volunteering through starting her Duke of Edinburgh Award which includes a volunteering element. She has now completed her bronze
and silver awards and is working towards her gold award.

Kulsoom has also taken up volunteering opportunities through her college in Mirfield, helping out at open evenings and events for the main school.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU VOLUNTEER?

Kulsoom has volunteered at Kirkwood Hospice charity shop in Dewsbury processing donations, maintaining a vibrant and clean shop and assisting customers with
queries. She has also volunteered in her school library helping students find the books they need, and shown parents and students around the campus and answered
questions during College open days.

Kulsoom has recently applied to become a Volunteer Befriender at Dewsbury Hospital.

Kulsoom said: “Volunteering for my bronze and silver D of E boosted my confidence massively, which made the decision to start my Gold award a no-brainer!

“Volunteering has made a huge difference to both my personal and academic life due to how flexible it can be and the countless number of skills that I have developed over the years.

“The thing I love most about volunteering is that I am able to see a smile on people’s faces who I have helped. This is what makes my volunteering experiences even better as it puts a smile on my face as well as those who I have helped”

To find out about volunteering opportunities volunteer@tslkirklees.org.uk, or call 01484 519053.

To all our friends in the local voluntary sector

Our local voluntary organisations are going to be more important than ever in the months to come. We want you to know that Third Sector Leaders Kirklees is here to do everything we can to help.

We are working alongside Kirklees Council to coordinate efforts to support people and communities throughout Kirklees, especially those who are most vulnerable and isolated. Please let us know what help your group needs as we all prepare to support each other in the coming weeks.

We can’t guarantee that we will be able to help everyone, but we will do what we can and involve others from the voluntary sector, the Council and elsewhere to try and help.

We realise that the services your organisation is providing will be changing in response to COVID-19, so could you also let us know where people can get up-to-date information about your organisation’s services and we can circulate that to make sure as many people as possible know.

We will stick together through this and TSL will work alongside you all (at a safe 2 metre distance) to help our communities come through it.

GUIDANCE: NYA YOUTH WORK EXPERT GROUP

The National Youth Agency (NYA) convened the Youth Work Expert Group to discuss the unprecedented challenges faced by youth work organisations in England as a result of Covid-19.

KEY QUESTION 1: SHOULD YOUTH WORK PROVISIONS CLOSE TEMPORARILY?
Youth work is an essential service for many young people, particularly those that are vulnerable. There is a need to carefully balance the needs of public health crisis that we currently face, against the need to provide essential support to young people at a time of heightened challenge.

ADVICE: We advise all non-essential group meetings are closed or delivered digitally (FaceBook, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp group call, for example). Acute youth work support is essential and should continue. More socially based youth work support (drop-in youth club etc) should cease.

Where groups do have to close, a dynamic (constantly reviewed) risk assessment should be carried out to determine the risk and impact on young people. We recommend a plan is put in place to provide contact and maintain relationships and support via the telephone, social media or digital platforms.

Young people should be given contact information for additional support services, including the digital offer provided by The Mix (free poster available through Youth Work Support – see below)

Some services may move to operating a fully detached or outreach provision, to make best use of outdoor spaces (within social distancing guidelines).

For those acute services that need to remain open for young people (targeting for example serious youth violence, child criminal exploitation, domestic abuse, health and wellbeing) we would recommend the following:

• Keep group sizes small, or preferably 1:1, 2:1 ratio.

• Follow all social distancing and Public Health England guidance.

• Maintain a distance of at least two meters between participants. Avoid physical contact – no fist bumps,
handshakes or touching.

• Sanitise and disinfect spaces regularly, with focus on all ‘touch points’.

• Try to operate digitally instead of in person, where possible.

• Keep regular contact with all vulnerable young people, via phone or appropriate messenger service.

• Keep yourself well, self-care is even more important during these times of crisis.

We will provide support and guidance on delivering digital youth work in the coming days. The NYA is working in partnership with UK Youth to develop and deliver web resources to support youth work, specifically during this pandemic.

Keep connected through joining the NYA Network or the UK Youth movement.

Improving accessibility for all

Huddersfield Giants Community Trust will be opening up a new sensory room, in a bid to create an accessible space for all.

The sensory room will offer specialist facilities for individuals and small groups of young people with sensory problems, anxiety, ADHD and autistic spectrum disorder. The space will feature an interactive floor, room colour lighting, UV fibre optic strands and a twinkle carpet.

It aims to create a calming safe haven. The user can choose to enjoy the sensory experience either passively, or more interactively for an exciting and educational immersive experience. The room provides an exploration of all the senses by expertly combining gentle audio, visual and tactile stimuli. The sensory room offers adaptable sensory experiences to best meet the needs of each individual user.

By providing this space, the Trust hopes to help young people to explore and identify their emotions, and support the development of core skills such as: self-awareness, self-regulation, motor skills, and social and emotional development.

Chief Executive of Huddersfield Giants Community Trust Lisa Darwin said: “The provision of a multi-sensory room will lead to increased holistic health and wellbeing and community inclusion.

“We will also have the capacity to invite families to have ‘Sensory Room Birthday Parties’ ensuring that children of all abilities can celebrate and socialise with their peers, within their own community.”

The Zone will be looking to offer the sensory room service to local organisations, special schools and families whom can positively gain from the endless benefits that the equipment and technology have to offer.

Walk for charity

Heights Federation are looking for volunteers to help out at their community gala and Heights Ultra Trail runs. The event is being organised to promote their wonderful Colne Valley area and aims to raise funds for three small rural primary schools and other local groups.

Heights schools are located on the slopes of the Colne Valley area of Kirklees. These old and rented buildings are set in rural villages. With tiny budgets, crumbling buildings it is a way of life with a make do approach but with incredibly devoted staff and volunteers, many have given their lives to ensuring that these schools remain vital community hubs.

Fun, games, food and drink await all those attending, with something on offer to keep the whole family entertained.

The event will take place on Saturday 11 July 2020, from 9am til 6pm.

For information, volunteer opportunities, sponsorship, stalls, attractions and advertising please contact info.hut@heightsfed.uk or by call 07810 862278.
