Zaid's Volunteer Story
I was looking for some one-day volunteering experiences knowing I could not commit to anything more with moving out of the area in the coming months. I found out about volunteering through the TSL website and regular updates provided by staff and applied for ones that interested me the most.
So far, I have participated in the Moonraking Festival planning and volunteered as a Steward at a clothes swap shop with WOVEN.
I appreciated the chance to meet people from diverse backgrounds and see the community come together. Working alongside volunteers and community members gave me fresh perspectives, and it was inspiring to watch everyone support one another – whether through workshops, sharing resources, or simple encouragement. The sense of unity and the tangible impact we made helped make the experience truly enjoyable.
One of the most memorable moments for me was at the WOVEN event where I saw how excited people were about reusing and reducing. Several attendees came forward with items to share, showcasing just how much they valued giving old belongings a new life. Witnessing that generosity and sense of responsibility truly moved me. It was a powerful reminder that when we come together and put our best foot forward, we can not only minimise waste but also make everyone around us feel valued and welcomed.
Taking part in these one-off volunteering opportunities has broadened my horizons by allowing me to learn practical skills including event planning, conflict resolution, and effective communication. Being involved in community events in Kirklees, one of the most beautiful parts of England, has given me hands-on experience that boosted my confidence in problem-solving and teamwork. I’ve also gained a deeper understanding of my local area and the positive impact that small acts of service can have. Overall, volunteering has made me more open-minded, compassionate, and determined to keep contributing wherever I can.
